Video Card Problem (Radeon 5770)

Ok so I just built my new computer yesterday and had it up and working with no problem. I have a 23.6' LCD monitor and was using HDMI from my motherboard (MSI 880GM-E43 AM3 AMD 880G HDMI Micro ATX AMD Motherboard) for the display with no real problems.

So after I got some stuff installed on my computer I decide to go ahead and install my new Radeon HD 5770 GPU. The directions said to make sure that I disabled any on board graphics from the motherboard but after a quick search through the guidebook I didn't see a way to do that so I decided to continue regardless. Anyways, I turned off my computer, installed the 5770 in my case, and turned on my computer again only to find that my monitor will not work. I tried using the HDMI, DVI , and VGA all with no success because my monitor just says no input. I then took the video card out but still had the same problem where my monitor still dosen't work.

My question is what did I do wrong and how can I fix this and get back to where I was (the monitor working fine).

If you MB has more than 1 pci slot make sure that the card is placed in the primary pci slot.

Check BIOS settings to see if there is a switch from MB IGP and PCI slot GPU.

go in your bios and there should be a setting which lets you toggles the default display settings. Its normally set to onboard switch it to PCIe and your set

Let's see here. It seems I put my GPU in the PCIE Slot on my MB but it seems there are actual PCI slots as well. Should I switch my video card to the standard slot and see what happens? The only reason I used the PCIE slot was because it fit perfectly.

Yeah, the only problem with that is I can't use my monitor at all.

Ok so I've pulled the video card out of my case completely and tried to reset my MB to default settings in the hopes of getting my monitor working like it was before I messed with the new GPU.

I moved the pins on the CMOS when the power was off and unplugged from the PSU. I left it in slot 2 + 3 for over a minute before moving back to 1 + 2 which was supposed to reset all the system configurations. I hooked up VGA and HDMI from my motherboard to the monitor like I had it when I first got my computer working but I still get a no signal error.

Hi, Falchion17,

You might try removing the battery for a couple of minutes with the system unplugged and depressing the power button to ensure the PSU discharges completely. You can also try unplugging the system, resetting the CMOS and, at the same time, pressing the power button for a bit to ensure the PSU discharges completely.

Once you do get the on-board video working you really need to explore the BIOS to find the setting to disable it before reinstalling the 5770. Make sure to connect the 6-pin power connector.

Edit: Start with just the VGA hooked up.

A call to MSI Customer support might be in order. 1-626-913-0828 for the USA.

Hope this helps.

Thank you so much! I've got the card out and the onboard graphics working again with HDMI after following your steps! I'll wait a bit before installing the 5770 to make sure everything's perfect :)

Hi, Falchion17,

Glad to hear you've got it working again.

Make sure that you disable the onboard video before you install the 5770.

Enjoy the new system!
