Video card Problem, Need Some Help Could be voltage.

I got my 4850x2 a few days ago and ive been having a problem with it locking up in some games ( not all of them ). I am pretty confident it is not the card but wanted to verify if it could be my power supply.

I do not have a 8 pin connector ( i have 2 6 pins ), but the video card came with a 8 pin adapter which splits into 2 4 pin molar connections.

So the card has a 6 pin and a 8 pin connection.


I have my 6 pin plugged into the 6 pin and 2 4 pins plugged into the 8 pin adapter.

i was reading my voltages in CPUID and noticed this


ITE IT87 hardware monitor

Voltage sensor 2 3.34 Volts [0xD1] (+3.3V)

Voltage sensor 5 -7.55 Volts [0x76] (-12V) <--- this is the one that caught my eye

the -12v shows -7.55 voltage, shouldnt it be showing close to -12v? does this imply my 8 pin adapter is not receiving sufficient power.

I'm going to assume the PSU is the Ultra X-Connect X2 550W. Check this out:

LegitReviews posts a followup on concerns about, guess what, voltage drop on the 12v rail. They also say: "this power supply is only rated to run CrossFire on the ATI CrossFire family of cards up to the X1600 series and on the nVidia 6 series for SLI users."

If that is the PSU you are using, I would have to say the PSU is a prime suspect and should be replaced even if it turns out to be something else.
 
The power supply voltage levels look fine (although its best to check with a meter).
-12V isnt used these days so the reading isnt always valid and doesnt matter.

Unplug everything, clean dust out of all slots, the cards contacts and heatsinks and rebuild if there is a dust build up.
Monitor CPU, GPU and motherboard temps.
 
i i checked all the connections and the case is mint clean.


Temperatures are lower then my gtx 260, it was around 69 max on load during tf2 ( wouldnt crash in that game ).

Drivesr are updated , so i am pretty convinced its either the card or power supply.

I will try to swap out the powersupplies to see but most probably i will rma this sucker back.
