Video Card Problem?.... I think ?!

Well last night I went to sleep my computer working fine. I did leave it on all night and when i get back I had some bad problems. The screen would sometimes flicker, get wierd warping graphics, about half the icons would not show... When I would open a program or start toolbar, sometimes it would stay half up, making everything impossible to read. Whenever a program would come up with a pop up window, all i could see is the top bar and not text or anything. Also would have random lines and spots. All while running horrible slow.

I couldnt figure it out. I restarted computer seeing if somehow that would help... nope. I decided to reinstall windows. First i tried repairing the current install. That did not help at all. So then I did a fresh install of Windows XP Pro, while not resorting to reformatting. Now I actually got my computer back. It runs clean with no graphic mishaps. Now when i try to install my Nvidia video drivers from CD or from downloading, on restart it goes back to the same stuff. I could get my computer working normal if when booting i would press f8 and have windows use setting from last working configuration. I tried the last drivers 61.77 and tried 61.76, and tried the ones that came with the video card something in the 40s.

Im afraid to update anything else now bc i don't wanna have to reinstall windows. Can someone help? I dont know if I need to just go buy a new vid card, reformat my hd, or something else. Any and all suggestions are more than welcome, thanks.

the system im running is...Aopen AX45-8XN motherboard
2.4 Ghz Pent 4
WD 80G HD with 8 mb Cache
512 MB PC-3200 DDR 400
GF-4 TI-4200 128mb Vid Card
 
I'm thinking overheating here - I have heard that new drivers can do that. See if you can cool it down. If that isn't it, it may be that the drivers are incompatable with your card. In that case, use the ones that came with it.
