Video Card Performance in 2005

I'm after a few thoughts on what people think the year ahead holds for the new products from ATi and nVidia. The jump to X800 and 6800 saw a doubling in performance over the previous generation, rather than the incremental changes of the couple of years before that. Are the two companies working on cards with even more pipes and more Mhz that'll give another 100% jump in 2005 or are the technical problems too great?

Also I don't know if it's rumoured or was true that Intel used to hold its faster technology back from the market and drip feed it to the public in order to maximise profits. Are ATi and nVidia in the same boat, or is their rivallry such that they are both fighting as hard as they can to trump the other one with ever faster products?

I'm interested to hear views on this.

The rumor mill reports that ATi is working on a new product called R520. It is rumored to have 24 Pipelines as apposed to 16 pipelines on the current generation. It wil more than likely feature SM3.0 as well. Nvidia is also rumored to be working on a refresh of the NV40. It will more than likely have 24 Pipelines and hopefully a working video processor.

I believe that ATi and Nvidia have to work extremely hard to beat each other. They release the best that they have.
