well i got my 7600gt and new xclio 450 watt psu

and my parents say that i have to get the geek squad people to install it but i know i can do it myself (fried old comp installing 6800gs, i think it was crappy mobo's fault)

so i was wondering if theres any real danger if im very careful

(trying to convince them so i dont have to pay 80$ :D )

Unplug the power open the case, pop out the old one, put the new one. Plug in the power connector. There you're done.
Just go slow and be careful and you'll be fine.

Oh, and don't do it on the carpet if you're paranoid about blowing it up again.

ya , i REALLLY dont wanna spent 80$ from some guys at the geek squad to install it, no point in my opinion if im careful, also if i do it ill be doing it on a hardwood floor sso no static prob, should i get an antistatic strap?

Nah, just touch an unpainted part of the case before you start stickin your fingers around in there. Same with the screwdriver before you un-do the screw holding the card in.

no screw, the comp is a gateway and they say the warrenty is voided if i open case, is this true? (can they check it)

I think there is a trigger at the case door, you'll set it off if you open the case and that will cause a message "case has been opened" during post. I'm sure there is a way to reset it, might want to look it up in google.

bah ok, i dunno, i may just get it installed by the squad
Waste of $80. They cannot intall it without voiding it either...

Geek Squad would void it too.

Just keep your computer plugged into the wall, but turn the power switch off. That way the case is grounded through the power cable, but there is no power going through it/trickling through the motherboard. Touch an unpainted area once in awhile.

do this on that hardwood floor too.

I have a gateway also...Its an oldie, only an 800mhz....but anyways...

Ive called tech support before for various other issues and ive actually had them tell me to open the case and look inside to see if a fan was working...

I dont know if that dude was joking or what, but I honestly cant see a "warranty" being voided cause you opened the case....What if you wanted more ram.....what would be the point of having extra slots if you couldnt do anything with them?

Im no computer guru, but I have installed a new graphics card before. I was intimidated too, but it really is simple. Its all plug and play basically. Just be sure to get updated drivers once you have it installed.

As far as static is concerned, just touch your desk or something,,,,,that is if its a wooden desk. Ive never had a problem with static and ive done this before while on carpet, so its not a big concern really,,,,,

Don't you guys have laws against that sort of silly "voided warrenty" in the US?
They tried it here in DK, but the court said that opening a case didn't void any warranty here in DK.
Like it has been mentioned eg. if you need to install new ram?
So they dropped that very fast.
We also got a mandatory 2 years warrenty on anything electrical/expensive here in Denmark...by law.

Terra - Saying stuff like that is illegal here in Denmark...

huh.. well i did have them install me an extra 1gig of ram (dang i hate my parents :D jk, but i wish i could do it myself)

that's lame, just do it yourself. it sounds like your parents are overprotective and are eager to spend money, but dude...that is a lot of money they charge.. $80. They are trying to rape ignorant people. I don't like people making money off of me.
