Video Card install help

Hope somebody can help me a bit. I tried installing my hd 5770 video card in the PCI-E slot in my board, but when I boot I get a black screen when using the DVI cable and VGA cables. When I take the card out and go back into Bios, there is no PCI-E option, just on board video and PCI. Is this right? Does PCI-E only show up when you have a card in the slot? When I have the card in the slot and boot I get a black screen and can't do anything. Could my main board be damaged because I had an 8800 Gt in the PCI-E slot until it broke recently. Any advice on what to do? Thanks

The only way to avoid the black screen and use onboard video is with the card out. Hmm

My pc is an HP a6150y, 2GB RAM, 550W Cosair PSU, 2.6 Ghz dual core.

Is the PCIe 6-pin power plug attached to the 5770?

Have you tried another card, preferably one that doesn't require a supplemental power supply connection?

Yes the 6 pin is attached. I don't have another card right now. Just my integrated graphics built into the pc. Could the card just be incompatible with my board or is this unlikely? Does the PCI-E option in bios only appear when you have a card in the slot?
