Video card help, maybe RAM help?

Here's the deal: I have 2 PCs that I built. the first is my computer built roughly 2 years ago, the second is my brothers computer that I just build this last week. My computer is stable, runs properly so i'm using it as a troubleshooting box to try and find errors in my brother's computer.

My computer has 2 Radeon HD5770s, my brother's computer has 1 Radeon HD7850. His computer has 2x8gig sticks, mine has 2x4gig sticks.

His computer is all set up and up to date - drivers, BIOS, everything, however, when I play games or anything that is graphically based the computer will play for less than 5 minutes and the screen will shut off and the sound will stutter. The lights and fans on the computer continue but everything else is frozen.

I've done some research and troubleshooting. My most recent troubleshoot was to take his video card out, put it in my computer and test it playing games. His video card works perfectly, games are crisp and run well. So I decide to take one of my 5770s and put it in his computer. I'm expecting the computer to freeze again (because i think it's a RAM issue) however, it doesn't freeze and has been running skyrim for about an hour now.

I've checked into the heat and the computer has great airflow and stays extremely cool, even under a load; and the power supplies are the same watts so no difference there.

I'm just confused because i thought skyrim would freeze (proving a ram problem) and it didn't.

help please:confused:

Update: I swapped the video card to the second pci express port on the motherboard and everything works fine... only problem now is it's covering the spot where my wireless card goes... should i take this board back and get a replacement?

Did you try to reseat his card into his computer's first slot again? Or did you just put it back in the second?
If you are sure the pci-e slot is not working right, i'd shoot for a replacement.

Also more info is always helpful to get responses. Mobo/CPU/GPU/HDD/PSU

I think in a PSU issue, could be the same wattage but what wattage its, what brand?... Also are the HDD pretty secure?... I saw on ppl problems on games when the HDD are not properly secured, any minimal movement over the case caused troubles over the HDD, specially in games where the activity its high... U tried again in the first gpu slot?.....

Yeah what how many watts is his power supply. What name brand. And how many amps on the 12 v rail

chip drift? ive fixed several interments just clean and re seat. buy all means memtest86 overnight get a dvom check psu for ac ripple and droop.

I had the exact same problem until I found out that the motherboard was shorting with the cabinet since I had not screwed the board properly. I presume your card has a beefy cooler?. mine is a 680 DCUII which is a behemoth, when I used to install it on the first slot the board did not even power on but it worked when I installed it on the second slot because when the card was in the first slot the mobo was touching a naked screw owing to the weight of the card on the cabinet hence leading to a short but this did not happen on the second slot. So just check if you have screwed the mobo properly to the cabinet and remove any unwanted screws from the case. Hope this helps!...

Geez! People always wanting information to help!
There needs to be a sticky for some of the topics stating they need to provide full system specs and such.
