Video card grinding

Computer specs:
PNY GeForce GTX 260 Core 216
Intel Core 2 Duo E7400 (OC'd to 3.0)
2GB Corsair ValueRam (1GBx2)
eVGA nForce 610i Motherboard
Antec 500W PSU (Semi-Old)

OS:
Windows 7 Home Premium
Ubuntu 9.10

The Run Down:

My video card's fan (GeForce GTX 260 Core 216 by PNY) is making a grinding noise -- and not the typical fan noise either, this sounds as if its a construction yard or a train going down some tracks. Yes, I did clean it.

About a month ago, my computer's CPU heatsink failed to work as its suppose to. So I upgraded to a thermaltake one. Now, the reason why I mention this, I have a Mid-tower case, so the CPU HS and fan takes up a whole lot. That's fine with me.

Now, three days ago, I heard a loud annoying grinding noise coming from my computer. So, out of a panic, I turned off the computer. Fearing it was the CPU fan. I waited a second, then restarted. No sound untill about four hours later -- when I was playing Half-Life 2.

So, again, restarded. Sound went away, and I got into contact with my computer-wizzy friend, who said it sounds like the a fan is hitting something. Yesterday morning, it did the same thing. I got on my knees, removed the case cover and listened in. It sounded as if its either coming from the new heatsink or my video card. I can't tell. Just to see if it's not from the CPU HS, I took the CPU fan controller and speed up the fan, and slowed it down. The grinding noise didn't make any difference, it was the same. Even though I can hear the fan it self humming louder. That's normal.

Restarted the computer, sound is still there. Turned it off, removed the video card, no sound. I went ahead and grabbed a screwdriver or two and removed the HS cover from the video card, and proceeded onto cleaning it. Afterward, reassembled and smacked it back into the computer, and it's still making the same sound.

Any ideas what it is? Any idea how I can fix it?
 
Sounds like the bearing has gone on the GPU fan, either the noise is from the bearing itself, or the impeller is shifting about on the spindle and hitting the shroud.

If the card is no longer under warranty, then the only options are to get an aftermarket replacement cooler or replace the card. Once a fan bearing has gone its rarely practical to try and fix it.

It's possible that the heatsink itself has come a little loose and is resonating when the fan hits a certain speed, but thats unlikely.

There is software you can use to manualy adjust fan speed on the video card, you could give that a go to confirm the problem.
 
I had a similar issue, the sticker had come off the fan and had fallen to the heat sink where the fan was hitting it. in other cases the dust may make clumps which the fan hits. i'd suggest taking it out and taking it apart.

i suggest you get a new heatsink for your card bud... PNY RMA is atrocious at best and i doubt they would let you RMA your card for just the fan alone... now i would suggest you to fix it too but most the time when the fan fails you really cant fix it at all since you cant remove the fan itself from the motor so if you do try to fix it and it still makes that sound then by all means get a new cooler
 
Buy a better aftermarket GPU cooler and be done with it.
 
The only time I had a grinding noise in my computer was when one of the "filters" on an intake fan somehow got loose and was "rubbing" against the blades.

I thought my computer was blowing up haha
