Hi everyone :)

I'm putting together a new computer for gaming. It'll be a C2D with ddr800 at 1000mhz. I intend to play, among other games, Oblivion.
I am sticking to $150-$170 video cards, so I don't expect to have great performance. I do expect, however, to be able to play Oblivion with Full distance view and distant lands turned on.
One card I had in mind is the XFX 7600GT. At $140, It seems to be a good choice.

What are your opinions on this? I would like to be able to play Oblivon decently at modest resolutions (1024 would be great, I believe (though 1280 would be even greater :D)) and with nice details.

Thanks,

Horacio

I would suggest you spend a little bit more and get a x1950 pro 512MB. For just under $200, the performance will be way better than the 7600GT. Esspecially considering this is Oblivion

ATI is the way to go with Oblivion in your budget range. There is no reasonable argument against this one, 1950pro should do nicely.

this thread shows how you can get a 7900gs for $80 after rebate, though you need to be near a fry's and microcenter to be able to pull it off, among other things

you also might want to look into the 7800gt recertified at newegg

personaly i would go with one of the XFX's thats what i have in my computer and i can run every game on the market as of now on full settings with no lag and i payed under $1000 for my entire rig

its up to you if you wanna shell out 30 more bucks for 4 more pipelines

tickle_me_emo, what is a recertified item? Is it a bad item that was fixed/replaced by the factory?

No doubt in you price range you want Ati's X1950 Pro. At this point in the game I wouldn't go Nvidia.

How much is does an 8800GTS 320MB DDR3 cost in the USA?
I presume it would be 250$ at most, though it is highly likely that it will cost less than that, so you just wait a bit and get yourself one of those babies - I'm pretty sure that it will outperform a X1950XTX, or if not it should defenitly be very close! :D

Agree with everybody suggesting ATI cards for Oblivion. Comparable ATI and nVidia cards might be neck-and-neck for most games, but ATI cards are much, much better for Oblivion. I owned a 7900GT and an X1900XT 256MB--comparable cards--and the X1900XT was so much better with Oblivion it wasn't even close. The only nVidia cards worth anything with Oblivion are the 8-series, which are way out of your budget.
