A friend of mine wants to buy my Geforce 4, so it looks like I'm in the market for an upgrade.

I'm only looking to spent between $200 and $250.

I'm really considering a FX 5900NU and flashing it to a 5950. Anyone have any words of wisdom or recommendations?

I'm not opposed to ATI as an option either.

If I do decide to go with the FX 5900, which models are having the greatest success with the bios flash, or just overclocking in general?

Thanks

Laban

Oh... I'm kind of in a hurry for this one. My buddy wants the Geforce 4 as soon as possible. Thanks Again

9800 non-pro.

I think you could probably even pick up a 9800 pro for 250.

An FX5900 non-ultra is a hell of a deal for around $200 - a 256 bit memory bus and 8 pipelines for less than a $100 more than a 9600XT. A little bump of the clock speed will get it up to 5900 Ultra speeds, but I haven't heard anything about flashing to a 5950 or such. As for overclockable models, just browse newegg for the models and look up reviews on google, and I'm sure that some of the other forum members will point out where to get the best deal.

you can get a retail b-b-a 9800 pro for $250 directly from ati granted you have the cash + any video card (yes, any).

err...What about a not working video card?

Yes, they will take them too. My friend sent them a non-working Rage Pro and they gave him the $50 rebate.

Get a 9700 Pro $209 Free 2nd day shipping use the rest of the money left and get a game. There really is no big difference between a stock 9700pro and a stock 9800np but clock frequencies.

Biggest waste of time and money. You have to pay shipping both ways. Better off buying direct from somewhere for $265.

To the original poster, your choices are a BFG 5900 for $185, a 9700 pro for $209, a 9800 np for $259, or a 9800 pro for $265.

EDIT: Found the BFG 5900NU for $180. The only difference between the one listed above is that this one is OEM and the other is retail.

Tread on flashing a 5900nu to a 5950ultra....full speed too boot...

Go with a FX 5900nu. Certain brands can, out of the box, OC to an FX 5950 ($450-$500 card) speeds, or can be bios flashed to the 5950 speeds, and OC even more.

Some of the great 5900nu cards that are definite bigtime OCers and seem quite popular for working with a 5950 bios flash are:

BFG Asylum $184.49 shipped

Gainward $229 shipped
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=14-128-157&catalog=48&depa=1

LeadTek $220 shipped
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=14-122-175&catalog=48&depa=1

EVGA $225 shipped
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=14-130-157&catalog=48&depa=1

Even if you don't flash the bios, with the great OC you get for $184-$230, the 5900 is by far the best bang-for-the-buck.

I wonder how a 9700pro would compar to a 5900nu?

even if the 5900 is runnign 5950 specs...i wonder...

Because i think you can now get a 9700pro for sub 200..

Too late :)

My gainward 5900 is on the way. It should overclock fairly well.

Odds are, I won't keep it long anyway. Probably sell it to someone when the next gen comes out.

Thanks for all the reply's
