i was planning to buy a 9800 pro for my upcoming mobil xp system but i ended up waiting too long. Since the wait is my dad's fault i beleive i can get him to buy me pretty much any card i want.I am just concerned aout the whole system bottlenecking the card in games. I was wondering if i were to overclock my xp-m to 2.5ghz (already have the parts)
If i could use an x800 and not be losing much performance.. i play all my games at 16x12 resolution and i have watercoooling so the overclocking to 2.5 ghz is pretty certain

Well if your dads buying get the x800. Yeah it will be a bottleneck but from what I hear A64 running from 2.whatever to 3.0 keep gaining FPS with this card, so if thats true I'm not sure but take it with a grain of salt.

Everyone really needs to quit being so concerned about the bottlenecking. If it's not one component doing it, it's another. The FACT is that if you have an X800Pro and your system is close to or faster than a 3.0GHz Intel Pentium 4, your machine will run faster than it would with any lesser video card. This is a FACT.

If your machine is not faster than a 3.0GHz Pentium 4 than you will still get better performance with an X800Pro than you would a 9800Pro. Although it won't be as much of a jump as it would be if you had a faster chip.

Even if you have a CPU that will "bottleneck" the X800Pro/X800XT then as you upgrade CPU's your video card performance will scale with it. It makes no sense to get another card that is anywhere near the X800Pro's cost, simply because of the "bottlenecking". As long as the price is close or within your budget it makes nothing but sense to go with an X800Pro or XT. As your CPU's get upgraded your video card performance will scale with it.

Isn't that a false statement considering what you have been saying?

What I meant was there is no reason to buy another card that is close to the X800Pro's cost instead of getting the X800Pro or X800XT simply because the CPU will "bottleneck" the maximum potential of your video card.

Here's a clue.... your mobile athalon @ 2.5Ghz will kick the living shit out of a P4 at 3.0.

Go ahead and get a x800 if you like, and quit listening to morons about bottlenecking, etc. Most gamers would be LUCKY to get bottlenecked at 500Mhz/1000Mhz on thier x800's :D

Go down to Zipzoomfly and buy 2 sticks of 512M KHX3000 ($114each) right now while they still have it.... BH5 (will need some burnin, 3.3Vdimm 200Mhz memtest86 test #5 for 72 hours min) . Slap this in a DFI LanPartyUltraB board with your mobile Athalon, running 240-250Mhz fsb 11,2,2,2,2.0. Trust me, your x800 system would have no apparent BOTTLENECK ;-)

I read an article a few days ago about this subject. From what I remember the x800 series from 2.8 ghz up processor the cards ran good. However on the 2.4 it lost alot of fps in most applications.

Omg, whish I had a father like that when I was younger. :p

I have a Amd moble 2500 O\C to 2300 with a pr rating of 3600. How does that fit into the equation of bottlenecking. Can I use the pr rating of 3600 or do I use the 2.3. Just a thought.

well i believe the only way to tell a bottleneck is to keep on overclocking the processor and ram (i never seen ram as a bottleneck before) then if the speed continue to go up then it's a bottleneck but the only problem with this is the chipset can be a bottleneck or the AGP port but that isn't right for a AGP port since no hardware fully uses it.

Maybe the video card makers should tell people what cpu to have to get the best performance outta there cards. prolly they will always say the best but hay.
maybe they should work together with chip makers to reduce the bottlenecking on the motherboards, which has been done. fact is there are many factors of the bottle neck, cpu, memory, fsb, your momma.. etc.. etc
