Hello. The fan on my video card is shelled out. I tried the "pull-the-sticker-off-the-fan-and-squirt-lube-into-it" trick three times now and it goes back to barely spinning at all and then stopping after about a day. So, anyway, I needs me a new fan for this beast of a video card, see sig. :)

The interior of my case is too cramped to mount one of those VGA Silencer HSF fan dealies so I have decided to do a little ghetto fan modding with some stuff I have laying around. So I'm digging around through all of the spare crap I've accumulated over the years and I spot the retail Intel HSF that I never used on a build I did a while ago. It looks like a good candidate to me so I pull it off the heat sink and have a look: http://www.free-image-hosting.org/pic.php?pic=6/17200242711.jpg

Now, how do I mount it? I'm thinking about just wrapping big rubber bands or zip ties around the card and the fan to keep it in place but I'm not sure how safe that would be. I don't think they would melt because they wouldn't be touching anything hot, unless the back of the card gets hot that is. Another thought I had was to super glue the edges of the fan frame to the edges of the ram sinks. Anybody know if that's a bad idea? Does super glue melt when it heats up?

Those are just the thoughts that I have. I know its really ghetto but it is just meant to be a short-term fix until I can buy something better. Maybe I'll get one of those Vantec fan cards or something.

Your insight would be greatly appreciated.
 
Thankies. Not over-clocking any more than whats posted in my sig. I'm kind of waiting to see if the zip ties are going to melt on the bottom of the card or not. I felt the card after 30 minutes of perusing the forums here and it didn't seem too bad, maybe I'll try it out tomorrow when my son takes his nap. Kick it up to 240MHz and see if I can get 35FPS out of FarCry. :D

i doubt zip ties will melt on that

maybe drill holes side ways on the fins of the heatsink and attach zipties on those holes?... or maybe instead of zipties, use nuts and bolts, or screws
 
That does look pretty ghetto as you have already stated. If you want a much more permanent solution for mounting that HSF, without it looking ghetto, try some Arctic Silver Thermal Adhesive. Apply a thin coat of the adhesive directly to the GPU, making sure you cover the entire GPU, just as you did with the thermal paste you used when you mounted the fan. I just used this stuff to mount a HSF and some ram sinks on a friends video card over the weekend and this stuff when dry (which takes all of 5 minutes) is permanent.

I just zip tied the fan and part of the shroud to the original heat sink, there is not an intel heat sink under there. Crap that would be huge and I doubt it would hold for very long before breaking the card in half. :)

I plan on blowing $15 on one of those Vantec Iceberg VGA cooler things in a while. I'm just so smitten with my ghetto mod that I don't want to get rid of it quite yet. Plus, the intel fan pushes a hell of lot more air than a typical 40mm fan.
 
Zip ties are holding out, no visible meltage or black smoke or anything. I managed to OC it to 233MHz/533MHz, which is as far as PowerStrip will let me push it, but only after I took my FSB down to 145MHz. I don't think my mobo has a divider for the AGP/PCI bus so I think that's what is giving me the problem. I checked the BIOS everywhere and didn't see anything remotely like "divider" so I think I'm sol on that front. I did manage to get it to run through 3d Mark 2001SE at the max speeds though. The farthest I was able to take it before was 213/501, w00t for the ghetto mod.
