video card dilemma

so i just bought parts for my new system and i have yet to buy a new video card for it. i am having difficulty what to get. i play games once in a while and im pretty content playing without fancy AA and AF and super high resolutions. all i can think that i would be playing is hl2, cs etc. i am on a budget and while i realize the 6600 gt has a good price/performance ratio i think its a bit out of my price range. i have looked at ati options but i am somewhat worried about ati's linux support, as nvidia's seems to be much better and smoother. here is what i upgraded from:

athlon xp 1600+ (palamino)
512mb crucial pc2100
epox kt266a mobo
geforce3 ti200

and here is what i upgraded to:

amd64 2800+
soltek nforce3 250 gb socket754 mobo
1gb corsair value pc3200...

so basically, i'm not a "hardcore gamer" but i wouldn't mind good 2d image quality and the ability to at least play hl2 (i already played the whole game on my old computer with the geforce3 ti200). so im just asking for some suggestions are maybe direction on things im overlooking etc. thanks
 
Your old computer was almost exactly like mine! Yes, even the Vid Card!

Whats is your Price Range? An ATI Radeon 9800Pro would always be a good choice. But a 6600/GT would always be a good choice too :)
 
i dont know, im thinking the 9800 pro might be out of my price range, im thinking 150 would be the absolute max, and yes i know the 9600xt exists but i just can't decide if it would even be worth it for me to spend as much as it would cost to get a 9600xt and then there is the linux+ati issue. help :( heh

btw the 1600+ computer is still going pretty good :) , and probably the main reason i upgraded is because of a looming drive failure i think. so instead of buying yet another ide drive, i thought it was finally time refresh the whole thing and get a good drive configuration. drives are where i splurged on this system and not video card (hence this thread). i got a 36.7 gb raptor and a seagate sata 200gb (yes for me this is splurging).
 
look on the refurbished section of newegg.com. you can get a 9800pro 128MB for around $150. make alsolutely sure its the 256 bit version.
 
9800pro is most likely your best choice and it'll run hl2 like butter, i run it on my system at 1024x768 with 2xaa/2xansio.
 
i would say to go nvidia only because you mentioned that you use linux.. the last thing you want is shitty driver support..

$179 - GeForce 6600 GT 128MB
$129 - GeForce 6600 256MB


id say youll be satisfied if you buy either of those.. the extra $30 might be worth it for the GT
 
hmmm, i don't have pci-e though on my new motherboard...agp.

i was also curious which cards are good at playing back dvd's and xvid movies smoothly and with low cpu utilization as this is important to me.
 
You can get the 6600 series in both PCI-Express and AGP.
 
really? i haven't seen 6600 agp's anywhere nor have i seen any 6600gt agp's for only 179.99
 
You realy dont have much of a choice for the 150 dollar price range if your a linux user AND a windows gamer... Its basically a crappy (but linux compatible) fx 5700 or a 9600xt which has great gaming performance for the price, but hates linux.
 
abudhu...i said there are no 6600 NONGT agp's nor any 6200 for that matter, and the xfx is out of my pricerange anyways. anyways moving along...

uggg this is really lame. between ati not having any new generation cards in agp (beside x800 but that is out of the question anyways) and nvidia not offering any new generation budget card in agp under 200$ this is beginning to annoy me. i mean if i want to use nvidia i either suck it up and pay 200+ dollars for a 6600gt or i get some shitty FX card.

Well I was just proving that there are 6600 series AGP's. :rolleyes: But then, I already suggested the 9800Pro a while back anyways. :D
