Video Card dilemma

I'm currently using a BFG 8800gt, and its starting to flicker when playing games.
Only thing I can do is restart the computer and restart the game.

I've been a huge Nvidia fan for a long long time. The only time I bought a ATI card was the 9700 pro back when nvidia had nothing to beat it. That card was nice and all the games I played were great. But the card got hot and eventually died on me.

So back to Nvidia (BFG in paticular) I've been a very happy camper since then. But now I'm having issues with my video card and I'm tempted to maybe jump into the ATI camp and get the 5870 since the price and performance beats out the GTX285 and almost most of the 295 scores.

I would wait for the gtx380 if there was some sort of a timeline in place. All estimates I've seen were for feb 2010. I believe my current card does not have that much time left, maybe a month or two and thats about it.

So bottom line, Whats your input stick with Nvidia or go with ATI?

Try a warranty return on the old card. Then you can wait out the new new cards.

I agree, unless you really feel that you need more power I would wait untill there is some competition. I was really put off by my experiences with the 4870 and 4870x2 compared to GT200, personally.

BFG is good about stuff like this. Even if you are thinking about upgrading, get that old card sent in so you have an extra.

Good point. I'll do the warranty on the video card and hold on to that for as long as I can till the 300 series comes out.

I'm surpirsed that no ATI fan boi has come out and said just jump ship to ATI yet.

If you like Nvidia there's no reason to logically tell you to jump ship. I am personally switching back to ATi after a few generations on Nvidia, but I am no fanboi. At the very least, when you do replace the card, you will have a dedicated PhysX GPU.

RMA it and stick it out for next generation Nv card, if that's your preference.

If you got to game now, get the new radeon, if you can wait, get nvidia (if price doesnt matter). Hehe. I've been an Nvidia fanboy for a while now, pretty much cause they always kick ATI's ass. Had the geforce 5200, the geforce 6800 GTX. As lof late been using an MSI 8800 Ultra OC for 4 years now. Until 2 months ago when it blew up...the thing could only run at 90C for so long (750 bucks down the drain). Being someone that had to get my gaming up immediately, I got the 5850. Didn't get the 5870, cause i know Nvidia will eventually have something better. Got it for 2 weeks now. So far, at 1920 by 1080, everything is maxed and smooth. I overclock like crazy so i Figure this card will eventually die too. But this time it'll only cost me 250 bucks...Funny thing is though, I always thought ATI sucked. But after a few weeks of sick ass gaming, I come to the conclusion that I really don't care whether its ATI or Nvidia or even intel. Hell, if Voodoo came back from the dead and mopped the floor with fps, I'd get that too. Just read the reviews and get the best. Who cares who makes it. It's all made in China anyway...

Thats a great idea, I'll actually do that and make it a dedicated phyx gpu.

I"m almost in the same boat you are. I still hve the 6800gtx, and the 7900gtx both running fine. But I needed a upgrade and watching benchmarks a while ago the price difference for the 8800gtx to the 8800gtx wasn't worth the $200 price difference.

This time around i'll probably do what you did and get the 5850 and mess with that for about a year to see how the 300 series cards work out till then.

Thanks all!
