I dont know where else to post this. im working on a new build for my cousin. havent built a pc in 4 years.

Specs:

Asus P5Q Pro http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131299
E8400 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115037
Corsair 620HX
Asus 4870 TOP http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814121288
500gb samsung
corsair ram http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820145214

I put it all together and it powers up but I get no signal to the LCD. Is the gpu the culprit?

Try working on the ram, sometimes they get weird, put out the back on... Any beeps?

Also... why does reseating ram do this? Why does it fix this problem?

ok.. i put the 4870 back in and no signal.... i just installed XP fine too.

Sometimes I think this is an old Sun Microsystems joke, several years ago that was on their fix list, they said 'reseat the RAM'..... it eventually became a big joke, but it apparently still works for some. If it worked for you GREAT, I don't think there is a valid reason why it should though.....maybe bad contacts, dust, who knows. Glad to see you got it sorted out though....

On another note, if you haven't built a PC in awhile, alot of new mobo's have onboard vid, if the mobo has onboard video, make sure the bios is set to init the PCIe vid card first instead of the onboard video.....

Hope this helps.

The slot you are inserting the ram into isn't perfect, nor is it foolproof.

Lack of perfection: there are tolerances for building anything, and the ram slots and DIMMs are no exception. You might have to jiggle the ram and reseat in order to make up for a small imperfection in the slot.

Lack of foolproof design: it is possible for you to insert the ram and have it look like it is firmly seated, and yet it does not make good contact with the conductors at the bottom of the slot (this is especially prevalent with inexperienced builders who don't realize just how much pressure you need to apply to get the DIMM firmly in the slot). Reseating firmly can fix this.

So, do you have any remaining issues? It's not clear from your scattered posts here and in your other thread.

Hmmm... sounds plausible!

samborarocks - I threw in my old 7600gt PCIE and it worked fine and I installed XP without a hitch. I shut it down and switched the 4870 in and BAM, nothing. RMAing back to newegg tomorrow >.<'' i need sleep.
