I have a problem that I suspect is hardware related, specifically with my video cards
(I have 2 GEFORCE 8800 ULTRAS in SLI)

Last night I was browsing the web with IE8 and had a few tabs open (as I usually do) and I decided to play a little C&C Red Alert 3. I then minimized IE8, not the best idea before starting a game but I have 8 gigs of mem and I have been doing it for weeks with NO problems, and started the game. I was playing for about a minute when for the first time EVER the game locked up. I then rebooted and this time started the game with NOTHING else running.

This time it locked up after a few seconds. After another reboot I started getting errors from Win7 64 bit saying “display driver stopped responding and has successfully recovered“. After that happened a few times my computer locked up. After ANOTHER reboot I started getting the BSD saying video drivers timed out and nvlddmkm.sys was the cause.

I then booted into safe mode and uninstalled then reinstalled the latest drivers (which were the same ones I was already using) and rebooted normally. I got the same BSD again. I went into safe mode again, reinstalled drivers, rebooted normally, same BSD again.

I am now here in safe mode and I am starting to see verticle lines appearing on my screen.

What is the best way to test graphics cards?

1 card at a time.. prob 1 of them are going and you may beable to fix it with the oven trick. I dont have a link for it.

Anyways just test 1 card at a time. If there both fine by themselves then the cards are fine and it may be another issue with something else or just do a fresh win reinstall.
 
yeah I agree. test 1 card at a time. try different drivers for each card. try to re create the problem with each attempted fix/update with each card and then maybe in SLI.
 
OK, Here is an update.


I took out one card and used just one card and everything was fine. Removed that card, put in second card and saw lines on my screen, but it DOES display correctly. Strange thing though, when I try to run the Nvidia control panel I get an error "no Nvidia GPU present"

Can this card be repaired or is it toast?

Side issue, after I replaced the bad card with the good card I heard a long loud beep when I powered up and the computer would not boot. I powered down, reseated everything, powered up, but now my internal speaker does not beep on bootup. Any ideas on testing/.fixing my internal speaker?

my 8800gtx had problems with timing too. only happen in games that was stressing it. faulty card
