I have a Geforce 4 and the fan bothers me, as far as I can tell its the loudest fan in my case.

I had replaced my stock gainward fan to the thermaltake (dont rememer the model but its the $12 one) vga cooler and the fans sound the same...

Is it wise to just mod it to run at 7volts or should I go for a more creative method, eg replace with a big fan to reduce noise? Not sure how I would go about doing that but I am open to recomendations.
 
:( Guess I made a boring topic name, well I want to make my video card a bit quieter.

How would one go about modding their video card to work with a larger fan? Large cpu heatsinks seem overkill and I dont know how I could possibly mount it onto the gpu.
 
the zm80d-hp cools my 5950 passive, it doesnt go past 50-60 deg c or so full load.. i would check but my mobos got no cpu.. i do have my side panel fan blowing at it but its only about 23 cfm or somthing like that since its a 7v modded coolermaster neon led
 
O.. so it seems that the best option is to go for a zalman.

Is 7v modding the fan on the gpu advisable though?

7 volting it would not be a good idea because in general the GPU heatsinks are so small that they really need what little power they already have. If I were you, I'd just take an old CPU heatsink and dremel parts of it off until it can fit. Then, just go to your hardware store and buy some plastic spacers, small springs, threaded metal stick thingies ( :D ) and the like so you can mount it on your GPU that way. It's a much cheaper solution than the Zalman, but takes a little more work...
 
O... cpu hsf would be nice to mount onto it but I lack the tools.. the closest I can get to being able to hack away at a heatsink is a hack saw. :D

Would there possibly be any designs for a duct system for a 80mm fan (would look kinda stupid wouldnt it?)

A hack saw and a drill with good bits is sometimes all you need, I wouldn't cross off that option.

Yes, a duct would work. You can go to your hardware store and probably get some flexible duct material and add a fan to it.
