Video card cooling Question

i was in a major attack with the dust monsters in my computer the other day (lucking my 2 cans of air saved me)
after i cleaned the case out, i started my computer back up and was just kinda playing around and seeing were the heat is coming from and looking at ways to cool my case better when i found some thing out...

the back side of my vid card, under (or over) the GPU, the PCB it Über hot, to the point i can even hold my finger on the pcb for more than about 3 secounds (and i have a high toloance to pain in my fingers)

vid card is a GF 3 that i have had to reaplace the HSF on (have some 7K RPM silvery thing on it, i "belive" it is on proply)
card has been working great, haven't had any problems

Question is, Is this normal? is my GF 3 about to go up in flames? (oh damn, FORCED to upgrade, what a shame eh?)

cliffs:
1. back of GF3 Über hot
2. Is it normal?
3. ...
4. no profit? kinda burned finger?

I don't know how hot NVidia's cards run, but my 9700 Pro is barely even warm. You might want to re-check that the HSF in on properly. Or just upgrade. Vid cards are dirt cheap lately, since everyone thinks that PCI-E is going to be this huge deal when it first comes out. I'd say you're safe getting an AGP card, I doubt that the extra bandwidth will even make a difference until a year after PCI-E becomes widely available.

nvidia cards, if not properly seated, will dislodge and burn a hole to the center of the earth.

so its normal for it to be really, really, really hot. my old GF4 (I am ashamed to have had one :D) had a weird metal plate on the back that acutally touched the PCU at the hot point, there were no solder points there and there was a crapload of CPU goop (i replaced it with artic silver because i, unlike a lot of people here, are not dumb) and the whole plate itself got pretty warm. so yes, its normal, no I wouldnt worry about it unless you are going for an OCing record and want to keep the temps way down.

1) can of compressed air
2) upside down
3)squirt
4) cooooool

yah uhhh my 9800pro is no warmer then my bed with an electric blanket on it

just get a 9800PRO

newegg has em for only $212 (free shipping i think...)

With a regular closed case I use bracket fans to cool the VC. They can be had for cheap, and keep the VC as cool as the air in the case. It even may drop the CPU temp a little with the extra air flow, I've seen 2 or 3 degrees decrease. I usually get them at Microcenter, and use the twin 80 fans, about $20. I have also made my own single fan with the slugs from a PCI slot and an 80mm fan. (One man's trash, another man's treasure!)
Another solution is use the Antec (or one of the many other brands with the same chassie/door setup) and the clearview door with an 80mm fan at the VC slot.
The extra cooling will allow a little extra performance with judisious OCing.

Get a 9800Pro, Best Buys has them for $200. Damn that was last week.

Thanks for the input guys!

i have been looking at upgrading for some time now, but my GF3 has been able to play every thing with enough speed for me to be satisifed, so i just can't push my self into buying a new card when this one works

i have also been wanting to wait for the next gen cards (4-13 ish) and look at getting one of them

if i feel dangerus on wensday i might pull the HSF off and make sure its all good under there

By all means, keep your GF3 card and DO NOT get a ATI 9800Pro!
Ignorance is bliss! :) :) :)

LOL, it is only bliss if you like looking at butt ugly games, with choppy framerates, and horrible bragging rights

The Geforce 3 GPU's run super hot, dont worry about it they are just a fire and you cant do anything about it. They will run stable and never overheat so you shouldnt have to upgrade unless its necessary.

My Leadtek GF3 TDH ran a good 60C with that huge piece of lead/aluminum on the top. They run hot, but stable.
