video card confusion

I am wanting to build my 1st pc...I looked at a suggested high-end system in a magazine using the Intel 3.6 p4 prescott and the Asus p5ad2 mobo. It(the Magizine article) suggests using the Radeon x800 xt platinum video card....I don't play that much video to go for that expensive a video card...any cheaper suggestions? :)

6800GT... Unless you are big into video editing, I would also recommend checking out a 939 90nm A64 with a K8T800 Pro chipset motherboard if you are gonna build now or wait on the NF4
 
Graphics card: NVidia 6600GT for $199

AMD processors seem to be the way to go if you are a gamer - quicker and cheaper than their Intel rivals for the most part.

Get an Athlon 64 for starters, not an Intel. Second i'd go with a 6800GT, the Gainward Golden Sample - if you can find one for a reasonable price (400-450) or any other 6800 GT like BFG, PNY, eVGA, XFX...
 
If you are not looking for a gaming system, don't get an Athlon. People will argue all day long as to which is a better system. Do some research and make your decisions.
 
I agree with the other guys (even though it's not what you're asking.) amd chips are cheaper, run cooler, and are better performers than their Intel counter-parts. Plus, the athlon 64's are a little more future proof with 64 bit processing.

As far as the card, you won't find any better advice than icehokplyr's. Look around a lot. If you don't play games there's really no point in paying the premium for the high-end models of graphics cards. the 6600's sound like good cards and can be had for under $200.
 
couple things you could do just depending on how much you want to spend.

for a high end get an amd 64 processor, a 6800gt graphics card or a 6600gt,

for ultra cheap you could

go w/ an old nforce 2, some DDR ram, amd Xp processor and a 6600gt AGP!! version when they come out in a month.
