I'm putting together an Opteron rig (using either the 165 or 170) combo'd with a DFI nF4 motherboard.

For a video card, I was considering a 7900 GS
(http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?item=N82E16814150183)

This is my first AMD system (currently running a p4/ati rig), and I'm not very familiar with PCI-E technology either. I'd like to keep the price close to 200$, but might be willing to nudge that up to 250/300 if I can gain a significant performance boost.

I keep hearing good things about nVidia, so I haven't looked at the new ATI cards much yet.

Anyone have any comments on the 7900 GS or recommendations for my proposed Opteron rig?

Thanks in advance.

get a x1950xt

better than a 1950 pro and less than $300 inc delivery

i looked at the nvidia offerings and was going to get an old generation 1900xt but then I saw the new gen had just been released.

the card has about the same amount of power as the old 1900XTX - i.e. A LOT

I was also looking at the 7900 GTO but its sold out and then I came aross my choice which seems to OWN every nvidia card short of a 7950GX2, and a lot cheaper

unless someone can prove me wrong :)

In the sub $300 range, you got some nice choices. If your wanting to stick with nvidia, I'd have to say that a 7900gto is going to be your best bang for the buck(~$260 from newegg). On the other hand, you can get an x1950pro for around the same price($246 w/ MIR).

Or, you can probably do a little better if you check out the FS thread here..

I got my Opteron 165 up to 2.7 ghz, and have a Geforce 7900 GT. But personally the Radeon X1900XT 256mb for between $250-$280. Nice card. If I could have waited, I would of gotten the Radeon. In your shoes, I would wait to see if nVidia puts out an 8600 GT or 8800 GS, I heard that they are spinning the low end G80 parts sooner then they did with the G70 of NV40 parts.

I would suggest an X1900XT, 512MB if you can find one, otherwise the 256MB version. If you would prefer to keep the price down, the X1950Pro or 7900GS are excellent choices, though I would reccomend the X1950Pro over the 7900GS.

Just ordered and awaiting arrival of dual Sapphire Radeon x1950 pros and an ASUS A8R32-MV Deluxe. The cards run $199.99/ea. This, my new FX-55 for $139, and 2GB Corsair for $189 should round out a nice upgrade from an MSI nforce 3, A64 3200, 1gb Kingston ValueRam PC3200 and X800XT. Looks like they just went OOS on these, glad I got in! Sapphire x1950pro

X1950XT. Fast card, 48pixel pipes, more future-proof than NV current offerings, and less than $300 after shipping.

Good card for the money.
