Video card affects on frame rate?

I really don't know where to start with this, so I apologize in advance if its all over the place.

When I had the dell pc it had a pentium d 930 @3ghz, 2gb ddr2 667, asus 8800gt 512mb card at 1280x720 I installed fallout new vegas and was getting at the most 20fps with the settings at low, even when I turned the graphic settings up and the resolution up I saw no increase in frame rate.

Now I have the following
Celeron g530 SB cpu at 2.4ghz, 4gb ddr3 1333mhz ram, no video card yet at 1280x720 still. I launched new vegas with fraps running, settings at low like above. I was getting between 20-30 fps mostly over 25. This is with the on board graphics.

So how will a 8800gt affect my frame rate with this new cpu? Guess I'm a little lost in how I can get a better frame rate with the on board graphics. From what I've seen in a review the celeron should be better then a e7300 core 2 duo which is way better then the old pentium d I had. Sadly that CPU is still a huge bottleneck and an 8800GTS will still only get you low settings in most current games..
 
I'm just trying to understand the whole framerate thing. With the Pentium d if i turned the graphics to max I was getting 60% gpu usage according to gpu z with the 8800gt. I'm hoping with this Celeron I can peg the gpu usage really good with max settings and hopefully get a good playable framerate.

I bought a evga 8800gt and should get it mid week like thursday. Granted this CPU mobo gpu combo is just a place holder til January when i get a z68 board, i5 2500k and a hd6850 I'm just trying to get my game on now.

How is the CPU a huge bottleneck when it beats a E7300 in performance and the E7300 is enough to be recommended settings for new Vegas? Also the 8800 series is in the recommended settings for that game also That's not a new game at all, not like I'm trying to play battlefield with it.
 
I think alot of the problem has to be the fact that you have Fraps running in the background. It can be a huge resource hog, so try running the game without that.

Otherwise, the recommended settings doesn't mean that you will be able to run everything at the max levels perfectly with perfect FPS. It just means that it is the recommended to be able to run the game smoothly, that's it. They probably meant smoothly at medium-low settings.

Also: one last thing.. turning the settings up and the resolution up doesn't increase your fps.. it decreases it!! lol. The reason the onboard graphics might be better is because your old CPU was.. im sorry to say.. really really bad. Therefore it was bottlenecking your GPU severely. With this new CPU and gpu, you should see a respectable increase in FPS.
 
You cna use Fraps, EVGA Precision, maybe MSI afterburner or Sapphire TRIX to show FPS as well, FRAPS does tend to use some power, so it may be artifically limiting the "true" FPS.

Also according to said charts, it may be a tad higher then E7300, however E7400 is higher then it, so overclock it some.

I suppose the fact that even though its a decent cpu, it simply may not have enough "grunt" to power it properly, a higher setting/resolution may not "help" because it takes more power to run it well, however running at the proper settings/reso can make a world of difference and make it less stressfull on the cpu and gpu, usually 1680/1050 or 1920/1080 can help alot, depending on if your monitor/system can handle it.

8800GT will definately be more powerfull then your IGP, however make sure to disable the IGP, remove the IGP drivers and such so there is no conflicts, and do keep in mind, if you GPU is not being given its full bandwidth that can also make it appear to not be as fast as it should, as can not having fast enough ram, alot of things can be a bottleneck, a Pentium D most certainly is, E7300 and G530 are not "perfomance" chips neither, but they should both be "reasonable" and should not be bottlenecking, with that card/cpu and such, if you are getiting in the mid to high 35-48 FPS range, I think you are doing ok.

Having a low resolution puts more stress on the cpu less on gpu, higher res puts more on the gpu less on the cpu, in a very simple sence 1440 and below, CPU, 1600 and above more load is shifted to gpu, but then again, if its bottlenecking somewhere else, well you get the picture.
 
I am fine running it at medium, I'm just looking for a playable experience. I figure new Vegas will hold me over til I get the new CPU and video card
 
I can turn the res up in game, that's not a issue. I just don't know if the 8800gt will be up to it at 1600x900 or not
 
8800GT should run it fine at 1600x900 or 1050, I wiouldnt crank the settings up, but I have a freind whom still uses an 8800 328mb one, the very first one, and he still can play all the games I like to, not the best performance no, but can still play them with an older quad core.
 
The problems lies solely on that Pentium D of yours. It's a bottleneck for pretty much every GPU from 2005 onwards.

No amount of overclocking can compensate for the sheer horrible performance of those CPUs.

Netburst is probably Intel's architecture with the lowest IPC ever (not counting Atom, which let's be fair, is meant for the lowest power draw possible on portable devices).

You NEED at least a Core 2 Duo to let that 8800GT breathe.
 
He says he is now using Celeron G530, which is a sandy bride based cpu and in the same sheer performance range as Core 2 E7400 or so, so this shouldnt be any issue, I think maybe the motherboard, the amount of ram, the hard drives being used and such, course, he also stated he was trying it with IGP and not the 8800, just by using the 8800 there should be a pretty decent boost overall, course it still is a dual core at a lower overall clock speed Sandy B chips tend to gain a fair amount of boost from increaded clock speed, but even at stock clocks, shouldnt have much if any issue from the cpu not feeding the gpu properly.

A game like BF3 or Skyrim, quite possible as they are quite reliant on core counts and clock speeds, but most other games/applicaitons are usually ok with a dual core, and Sandy B anything are not "slow" maybe underpowered compared to what one could get, but they are not useless neither, not by a long shot.

Pentuim D had the problem off running its external speed a lot because of the 2 cores each having its own cache. So one cache is full it goes hunting for data in the ram altough theres still space available on the other cache.
 
I think the pentium D was not so much the cache coherancy or the inability to use its sisters cores "dedicated" cache, as many modern chips can still have L2 or even sometimes L3 cache hidden for anything but per core use. I think maybe the problem boiled down to a very complex thing.

P4, and to my knowledge Pentium D tried to use a large deep pipeline that took many steps to fill, clock speed helped it fill, but at the same time if at a higher speed this "pipe" can get filled with errors or junk that is/has been completed much faster, and when that happens one of the cores, sometimes both, needs to flush the "pipe" and start over again, this is why the Athlons and now Core2/Core i7/Phenom II do so well.

They reduce the latency on the cache, make sure there is less errors/mismatching, they are able to work on thier sister cores info when they need to flush the "pipe" but most importantly have a much shorter pipeline to being with. The one true benefit of having a shoter pipe or at least less steps to fill it, is that if something happens it simply requires less "ticks" of the cpu if you will to refill it to continue doing what it was attempting to do.

Modern wise we can see what happens with a very deep pipe and high latency in a very general snece, Bulldozer is a very cool design, however becuase of its emphasis on higher latency and a deeper pipeline to try to squeeze raw clock speed, it suffers in performance in alot of ways, not to mention due to the fact that current OS are not able to "inteligently" mange threading to the appropriate core at the appropriate times it also affects what edge it might have with the higher speed per core in a given time.

:p anyways, Sandy B is kind of the medium ground, intelligent usage of its power, good clock speeds that are able to feed itself well, and also very importantly it is able to see ahead of time where it might make an error and try to fix the problem to not need to flush its pipes.

I think the G530 might be slightly slower then it could be, and the 8800 underpowered for what modern games need, but I firmly believe, if the motherboard, ram and all the extras are running the way they should, both the cpu and gpu in this case are probably paired up with each other quite well, "comfortable" as long as they are not pushed to the redline sorta speak :)
