Hey guys,

is it worth putting a 9800 Pro in a Pentium 4 1.8Ghz with 512MB RD ram?

1) will the 1.8 P4 bottleneck it significantly?
2) will it play recent games at medium res and stuff, with decent fps (25-35) ?

Upgrading from a Geforce 4 MX440

I think it should be ok...i had a 9800xt with a 1.8 ghz amd and it ran just fine. I dont think you should have a problem unless your power supply is weak...how strong is your ps? I ran games at 1280x1024 on my xt and they were on high settings and got around 30-70 fps.

You shouldnt have any problems as far as I can tell...we have 9800Xt's in pcs at school with 1.6ghz comp and we play farcry all the time in class.

9800PRO would be a huge upgrade from a GF4 MX. What games are you trying to play?

i ran an x700pro in a P4 2GHz and then put the same card into a system with an A64 3000+ and both had 2x512 ram... The P4 2 ghz was a pretty big bottleneck... still there will be an improvement over the card you have now that makes a ~$100 investment worth it

I had a 9700pro in a P4 1700MHz with only 256 RDRAM and it made a huge difference from the ti4200 I was coming from. Of course I wasn't playing today's recent games though but games from a year or two ago and it did well.

Also, I'd imagine it depends on how you run your games. I'll bet that actually running hi-res with higher AA and AF takes the burden off your CPU and taxes your video card more. However if you like to run at medium res and lower settings but with high framerates then I'd guess that your CPU will become a big bottleneck.

I can't believe your school put 9800XTs in their lab machines. My school (and most schools) just let you deal with integrated graphics.
