I have a $250 allotment for a video card upgrade and I figure I will replace my 9600 Pro with a 9600XT but have a general question ... the 9600XT I'm looking at through Newegg is a refurbished card (and I know the general rule of YMMV) but I'm curious to hear people's experiences about Newegg refurbs (good, bad, ugly, etc etc)

You have enough money to waste on an upgrade like that...??? Forget it mate, get a good card, 9800pro or something, leave the 9600s in the dust.

Yeah I would not do a 9600pro to 9600XT upgrade at all... I would keep saving and get a card in the 9800 or X800 line...

well, I figured this much ... the 9600 pro I have is checkerboarding a lot (don't have it oc'ed) ... the stock cooler is still in place but instead of the thermal adhesive that was on the VPU core, I slipped some AS3 on it (after carefully removing the previous adhesive of course) ... I figure I might be better off getting a better cooler (Giant 3 or a VGA Silencer to name two good coolers and bye bye checkerboards :D ). If possible, I'd like to avoid buying another video card at least until the fall when I start college (and have money to burn).

note: if this is off-topic in anyway, please move it to the appropriate forum.

mmm, I am not sure what your post is about then,

checkerboarding is a problem, and yes this can be due to heat, getting a better cooler or fixing the heat problem will be cheeper then getting a new video card. if in fact it's a heat problem and the card is not flaking out...

If you are looking for advice on the best route, it seems to me that you have a good idea what needs to be done...
