I sold my old 9600GT on sunday for $100...

1. I could order 4850...
2. I could wait ontill AMD Direct x 11 cards are out (sept/oct)
3. Put some cash and pick up a PS3 ontill I buy back another video card.

I really think that the best choice for you would be to pick up a 4850, or, if you can find it for around $100, a 9800GTX+/GTS 250. Both are very powerful cards; much better than the 9600gt was.

Get the HD4850 for now. You can find it for around $100-$130 online (and possibly less used).

You havent said what you gfx card you are currently using and what you need the new gfx card to do.
Is this for the machine in your sig?
What res and what games?

I am currently using the onboard 3200 video...

games currently installed are cod mw, cod waw, prince of persia, most wanted, grid and dead space.

I use either display 720p for action/racing games and 1680x1050 for fps.

As you are using an Athlon 64, anything above an 8800GT is wasted.
Your CPU cant max an 8800GT sadly.
The faster you can get your CPU to go, the more you will get out of a new gfx card.
If you want to buy current gfx cards, a 4850 is fastest card I would partner with your CPU.
Anything faster will be wasted.

You also need to be careful of power draw as you only have an Antec 380W.
An 8800GT or 4850 will be pushing it, any faster card will for sure need a more powerful PSU unless you like taking risks.
