ok, well I got a free 5950u, and I mainly play CS and WC3, but want to play HL2 / Doom3 when they come out

should I sell the 5950u for a 6800nu? how does the 6800nu handle older games (ie cs), is it better or worse than 5950 for such titles?

Yes the 6800nu will run older games at higher frame rates. But are you really going to see a benifit between 350 or 400 frps in Q3?

Personally, I wouldn't sweat it. Of course D3 will play just fine on your card. How else would they sell units given very, very few people have a 6800nu. Christ, I have money in hand and want to order a 6800gt but have to wait in line.

So, I would call it a "nice to have" but nothing critical. All this spec worry over D3/HL2 is really funny given that these games are not out yet and that they will have to play well and look good on current rigs or who will buy them?

dammit, I want a free 5950U

I would say unless you really need the performance, that 5950U will last until these new cards get a lot cheaper or the next gen comes out.

AND YOU GOT IT FOR FREE!!! arghhh!!!!

This is what I would do:

Seeing that 5950's go for about $380 new and you got it for *free* , I would sell it and use the money for a better card. Let's assume it can fetch $300, as there are a couple going for $310-320 on eBay at this very moment. Then I'd kick in $100 of my own money for a 6800GT/x800Pro. The 6800nu is still a fair amount better than the 5950 despite the 128 MB RAM vs 256 MB. difference.

Either way, I'd sell it and upgrade.

Good luck with your decision
