Please help me! OK I have had a Tt Giant III on my 5950 Ultra for quite a few months and just yesterday I got some ramsinks to put on that sucker so I could OC like crazy. Anyways after installing the ramsinks and cleaning up some AS5 goo that got spread around accidentaly I reinstalled the card and proceeded to boot up. When I booted up I got some error about memory not being able to be read and after I clicked OK my computer went into a freeze with a beep from the tower speaker which would last about 10 seconds and then come back for about 5 seconds and then over and over so I rebooted again. Right before I installed the card I had AS5 on my hands and although I did remember to clean and search the card for AS5 traces I forgot that I saw some on the AGP port where the gold connectors are and installed it with AS5 still on it. I just remembered this when I started KOTOR and saw little red and blue specks on the screen and was like "WTF?" so I uninstalled the card and saw that there was still the AS5 that I saw on the slot so I cleaned it off with an alcohol dipped q-tip and I also tried to clean the inside of the slot on the motherboard too but I couldnt find anything to fit in there to do so. My problem is even though I cleaned off all of the AS5 in the important areas (except the MOBO) I am getting these artifacts all over the place and am having a few lock ups here and there. Could my problem be that there is still some AS5 stuck in the mobo AGP slot or does it have to do something with the ramsinks? The ramsinks I used are the ones that are advertised with the Tt Giant III of which I bought 8 extra so I figure that is far from the problem. I seriously think its the AS5 stuck in the AGP slot but I cant think of a way to clean it out. Is it possible to remove the plastic cover and clean it out without removing the mobo? Please help me because I dont want to have to spend my next pay check on a 6800 Ultra just yet. Oh and I let the alcohol dry and whatever before I installed the Video card and turned the PC on. I am very careful with my stuff so I figure that I already know what my problem is I just cant find a way to fix it. Im scared because I really love my mobo and I expected to get far with my memory overclock after installing these things but when I try to OC at speeds even under what its currently at it says that my settings are too high and to lower them so I think something is wrong in the AGP slot. Thanks!

Well the first thing i would do is either try a new card in that slot, or that fx 5900 in a differant pc to see if the problem replicates. If it appears to be your slot, installing and removing an old AGP card is the only thing i can think of to clean the slot out.

I would take another look to make sure that there isnt any left on teh mobo or the card, if there isnt most likely u created a short on the card, try the card on a different PC and see if the problem persists, and from there you can locate which piece has the problem

Ya well sadly this is the only video card and PC that I have right now. I have an old gateway sitting around but it needs a new CPU and Im sure my xp2600 wont work... I think.

If you have a flashlight you may be able to see down into the AGP slot. If you dont see anything there, i would then look around the slot and on the card. Its also possible your ramsinks are causing some problems.

live and learn.. :p

At least from now on you'll know that arctic silver + smudging on pc parts don't mix..

Ya I agree also with the above guys, just search your card for smears.. clean and retry, try the card in a friends PC if you don't have another as well.

corect me if im wrong but artic silver doesnt conduct electicity right? so even if it was smeared elsewhere it shouldnt matter as far as short circuiting is concerned? now if its blocking the connectors of the agp card from connecting with the slot then that could definately be a problem...

if it conducts heat it might conduct electricity....there both just forms of energy....thats why copper is good for electricity AND heatsinks, but i dont think that conducts electricity but i wouldnt know.

That has to be the longest run-on sentence i've ever seen. And i've read RP forums. Those people don't know what a dot is for.

You couldn't be farther away from the truth. Just to prove you wrong, I would say that diamond is the best conductor of heat, and a very good electrical insulator. Other than some multiwalled nanotubes, it is still the best conductor of heat.

It contains silver, so I don't see why it shouldn't be conductive. Normally, epoxy is a very poor conductor, which makes it a very good insulator. However, when you mix some fine silver dust in it; it becomes a good conductor. I imagine AS5 has a lot more silver in it than your normal silver imbued epoxy.

huh....well guess i was wrong.... :D ty for clarifying that
Yes, the two are not related. The properties of matter are determined by it's structure. If arranged differently; gold may be a very good insulator.

I got a free Barton because someone gooped AS5 all over it (bridges etc). I hosed it off with a can of brake clean, let it dry and had a good working 2500+.

If worse comes to worse, pull the mobo out of the case and hose the AGP slot down with electrical contact cleaner, same with the video card.

good deal....but was it gooped all over AND turned on.....cause if what the other dude says is true and its conductive he might have shorted the video card......and if THATS true then cleaning it at this point is redundant.

first step break your massive IIP into a few paragraphs. each a couple snetenses long lol

And just make sure you clean all the AS off. If you put the ram sinks on I assume you used the thermal epoxy not the thermal paste. Then its much harder to clean up your mistakes.....

The ramsinks came with thermal tape so that shouldnt be a problem at all. As for the AS5 I'll just remove the hard to f*ckin install Tt Giant III and start all over. Good thing I have a 12gram tube otherwise Id waste a whole tube for just this application.

A 12 gram tube should be good for 50+ installations.

Technically rubber conducts heat. It's not really known for it's electricity conducting properties though. ;)

Using AS5 with no prior experience.....might as well have poured water in there with everything running.

I read the post (I think, I got dizzy after the first couple lines). I didn't see anywhere that he said he had no prior experience with Artic Silver. Maybe your multiple decades of experience working with Artic Silver makes everyone look like a novice to you? ;)

Today Im going to take apart the whole PC and work on a few things. Its my only day off this week from work so it will be kind of fun and I am going to reinstall windows as well. I also need to make sure I installed that Neo backplate on my SP97 properly so this rebuild wont just be to fix this problem. The Tt Giant III requires thermal paste to be used in the places where the pipes go so I have to use like 1/3rd of a tube of the smaller tube of AS5. I guess I'll reinstall the Tt Giant III as well and clean it all off but that was kind of a hassle last time so if I decide to do that then it will be after I fix all of my other problems. Thanks for the help guys and sorry about those run-on sentences, I was just trying to get help ASAP.

Just wondering, if we are not allowed to use something without prior experience, how do we get anything done? There is a first for everything ;)

LOL^

I didn't say that to be a smart ass or imply that this guy is challenged, you know......mentally. :) But come on. Using an electrically conductive thermal paste like a fire hose on your PC compentents is kinda dumb. He said he smeared it on like 3 different items including his hands! LOL :D I found it all funny specially after he said he powered the stuff up anyways. O well, I'm harsh I guess. muahahhaaaaaa

PCfixerdude....sry you fubar'ed some of your stuff. I hope you get all that crap cleaned off and everything works out.

P.S. AS5 is electrically conductive. :D

I didnt intentionally smear it all over my hands and if you knew how troublesome it was dealing with the Tt Giant III then you would be taking notes on how well I handled the situation. Anyways I took my whole PC apart, cleaned up a few things and put it back together and its working great. I reinstalled the Tt Giant III and this time made it nice and clean so no more problems. PC needed a dusting so everything went well without any problems but Im quite tempted to sell my 5950 Ultra and get me a 6800 something. Thanks for the help guys and if anyone is interested in buying my 5950 Ultra w/ Tt Giant III and copper Tt ramsinks then LMK.

clearly, video card people don't know crap about arctic silver 5. no, it is NOT electrically conductive. yes, it IS thermally conductive. why do you thnk you can quite literally layer the entire top of the processor and still boot fine (granted, it's not a good idea, but you can). http://www.arcticsilver.com/as5.htm just go there, you lazy bums.

as to your problem of artifacts, there's prolly still as5 inside the contacts creating a bad connection. as5 is the thickest of the as goops, so it won't clean out of the slot nicely. and if you managed to block the contacts, i'd bet anything that you damaged the card. it could be anywhere, depending on which connections you might have blocked.

and i'm just curious... why are you so messy with arctic silver? all you need is a ball-bearing-sized drop for most jobs.

And your point? Air is a conductor. Luckily, not a very good one, but it can conduct electricity. The only reason that you can boot with a CPU covered completely with AS5 is luck. The electrons will always follow the path of least total resistance. Apparently, traveling through the CPU and into the ground provides an easier path than cutting a few corners on the AS5. Also, apparently, not so with the AGP slot.

That was my point. Somebody who was so quick to judge others didn't even have their facts straight.... just stating the obvious.

I have.. and I always go through a stack of alcohol pads trying to keep everything clean....
