I know it's all there in the threads - prices, benchmarks, comparisons, pipelines.. litte green elves. But I've been perusing all the info for the last 3 hours and my head is like fallin off.. it nearly 5am, I ain't slept much, and my (demnding) mate wants his upgrade recommendation by tommorow.

So please, you guys with reflexive instinctual type knowledge of the current GFX landscape, would ya mind giving me a hand? (When I did my last upgrade, it was quite simple - there were only a few cards, and you simply paid for what you could afford).

So, assuming I'm still jiggling the other components around, which GFX card would be suitable for the following price brackets :

A) up to £75 ($130) ( X700 256MB ? )
B) £75 to £100 (to $170) ( X800GTO 256MB ? )
C) £100 to £125 (to $210) (err not sure really, for £135 I saw a Point of View 6800GS)

Bracketed are my mangled attempts at interpreting the vast amount of data out there on vid cards.

Requirements are simply normal 2d usage, and light gaming (ie he's happy with low settings) for the next for years. Oh yeah two more points - 1) this is a PCI-E upgrade. and 2) I see A LOT of new 128mb cards about. I kind of assumed 256mb was fast becoming the norm and would soon be necessary - is this false? Will 128mb be fine for years to come?

Thanks tons!

PS apologies for spelling etc. I am fucking knackered,

Forgive me, I had to google knackered. ;)

Obviously, the most potent card is going to give your friend the longest amount of useable serivice. I say go for the 6800gs. They are great overclockers.

As for the price brackets

6600gt
X1600XT
6800gs

Its hard to say though. I don't know what availability and pricing is like across the Atlantic.

for 1), 6600 GT 128MB or 256MB ? Here, you can't seem to get a 256MB one for anywhere near £75 (about $130)

I also read some comparison chart thingy on another thread that showed how the x800gt's trashed the 6600gt's. what do you think? I'm trying to dig up the bookmark.. ive bookmarked that much crap ... :)

thanks for the input btw highly appreciated

No problem. I think you are right. I looked at a few reviews and it looks like the x800gt outpaces the 6600gt in most tests.

I really don't know the effect that 128mb vs. 256mb will have on the 6600gt. If there is a performance increase, it probably isn't worth the higher price.

Its really hard to say how each of they cards will perform far into the future. (well, a few years is far into the future for computer technology these days)

All you can really do is buy the best you can now.

thanks. that point about 128 vs 256 is very astute. its nice having 256 on my high end card.. but on a low end card, by the time games simply wont work on 128mb cards, you're going to need a completely new card architecture anyway. so if you're buying low end .. and you really are on a tight budget - go 128!

this has definitely made the vid card option a lot easier, and i think i've got most of the other sutff pinned down.

thanks
