Vid Card Overclocking Errors

I wanted to know everyone's expirience with Overclocking their vid cards and the errors that they get.

With my 9800 pro I would get sparkles for too high of a core clock, and missing textures or random polygons on high mem clocks.

With my 6800GTs I haven't noticed sparkles and rarely get missing textures even when overclocked to the max. However my games do freeze or crash to desktop on occasion.

One major question: can overclocking your vid cards lockup your whole machine, cause reboots, or deal out BSODs?

I was under the assumption ( due to 9800pro experience ) that oc'ing that card only effects the 3d application not the whole system stability.

Yes.

Well let me be more specific since the detail info is just flowin...

Does everybody here Usually ( like 90%+ ) start to see artifacting b4 crashing, BSODs, or freezes, due to a vid card OC when they KNOW their CPU is stable?

I was short on time last time, but here is the scoop: I have had cases where the system has BSOD's, freezes, artifacting etc. when the ONLY thing overclocked was the video card, and the problems went away when the video card was clocked back to stock speeds.

The symptoms of a video card pushed too far will depend on the appication/game, the drivers, the programming language used (OpenGL vs DirectX) and probably other things I am not thinking of right now.

It's like asking if a car will have problems driving if one tire goes flat.. well yes it will. True it is only 1 out of 4 tires, but it will still affect the whole car.

Whether or not youf get a warning such as artifacts and texture corruption depends on the on how high you attempt to overclock, and the gpu itself. In other words, you may not get any warning at all. Not all gpus, even the same model gpus, react the same to overclocking.

What you may not notice which I finally did is when my radeon 9600 pro crashed from too high core, it actually had missing textures (back spots all over)
People tell me the solution is up your vcore, not that you should do it.
The radeons get plenty of power though, so I pushed my Radeon 9800 Pro to 500 just to see what I could do with it (if anything to get rid of the artifacts) and it has never crashed from my current overclock.

I found out that my MSHTML.DLL and my WMP.DLL errors i was getting was cause by my overclock of my video card. Even though im able to run all 3dmarks and Aquamark, long term use would produce these errors.

I dropped it down alittle and all is fine.

Thoose errors are BSODs, right? Did you get any artifacting before this happend? What video card were you using?

Essentially, I have a theory that ATI cards show artifacts before crashing while an Nvidia card might not. (well the theory could be Prev Generation vs Current Generation instead of ATI vs Nvidia)

No these are NOT BSOD....these are just crashes within windows. Windows Media player would crash when playing videos if my video card overclock was too high. Specs in my sig are current.

So how did you see that there was "MSHTML.DLL and my WMP.DLL " errors? A standard windows dialogue box?
