so I have a new 9600XT AIW. trying to install it on a shuttle AN35N.

Instructions say I need to install gart before putting in card. So (while using my old 8500) I DL the latest drivers from Nvidia and install.

I turn it off and plug in 9600. Turn system on and get a long beep. System won't post. (Beep is the same as when there is NO video card plugged in)

Is vid card dead?
How do I verify that gart is installed correctly?
Even if gart wasn't installed, I would think the system would still be able to post and boot into windows using some generic vid drivers, is this not the case?

Not sure about all that gart stuff, but if you put your 8500 back in will the system post and get into windows? If it will I would say that the 9600xt is the culprit. It could be fried (although that would be hard seeing as how you JUST started using it) or it could have just came from the factory defective. On another not, how big of a psu do you have? What brand and how many amps on each rail?

yeah system still works fine when I put back the 8500.

My PSU is an Antec True330

+5 30A
+12 17A
+3.3 28A

TCO of those 3: 310 W

Since it didn't POST then the gart thing really doesn't matter. Either a bad card or it isn't seating properly.

since the issue of PSU came up, I unplugged everything so that only 1 HD was connected, 1 stick of ram, and the video card.

Same results.

I think I'm just gonna go ahead and take it back to the store for exchange.

no I installed Nforce drivers for my mobo.

the ati instructions said update your agp drivers for your mobo, then physically install the vid card, then install the ati drivers

the vid card needs a 4 pin molex plug from ur psu

actualy nm not the 9600,

is this ur first vid card install ? i guess it could be defective but this is just another reason y the hell u dont buy hardware from stores. see its easy for a customer or angry employe that only gets 7/hr to drop a box (oops didnt mean to) ONLY buy ur hardware online

Yeah the online warehouse vendors treat all products with the utmost care. I have never had defective hardware from any B&M store. Your reasoning is assinine in my opinion. The delivery company will trash that box more than any other company involved.
