viable upgrade to X1950?

specs:

Intel 2.8C @3.0 w/ scythe ninja
ABIT IC7-G max2
2 gb corsair twinX
ATI Radeon X850pro (flashed to 16 pipelines)
EDIT: PSU - Antec truepower 2.0 550

resolution=1440x900

I was wondering if it would be smart to buy a X1950pro AGP with my current setup... I was just looking at toms hardware's AGP guide (linky) and it seems that on todays games, the video card usually limits at higher resolutions. I probably am not going to do a full comp upgrade until fall. I would really like for this to last me another year or so.

- I will probably be able to get some money from a friend of mine for the X850. probably around $100, maybe a bit more.

Edit: I'm looking at this one. (slightly overclocked 512mb)

XTRA EDIT: the games I play are mostly company of heroes, fear, and oblivion. with COH being a huge part right now.

Well I think you'll be slightly cpu bottlenecked but it should be an improvement.
How long are you holding on to that system ? Seems like a good time to upgrade everything.
But for $100 out of pocket, I guess it's pretty safe as long as you're not expecting miracles. :D

Those prices look bunk. I thought X1950XT were a little over $200.

I don't think it's worth it if you already unlocked the pipes on the x850pro. x850pro unlocked is about fast as 7600gt. 1950pro might give you 20 more frames in recent games but it's not all that much faster. I went from 850xt to 1900gt overclocked to 1950pro+ speeds and all I can do is add 2x AA.

Don't waste your time upgrading to another AGP card in your current system.

You might want to overclock your CPU more. 3.0ghz on a older platform is slow.
 
I won't be able to build a new system for at least another year...thats why im looking at doing a final "cheap" upgrade. I can spend $250 and get a nice boost out of my system for that year. it sounds good to me. not to mention this system will be used as a media center for a good while after that. I still haven't received any help about which card I should get... any help there will be greatly appreciated.
 
If you want to upgrade then go for it. I would just overclock the CPU and save up money for a new system... It's just not wise to get a new card on a old system today.

Or you can just sell your current motherboard and processor and swap it out for low end AMD system which would still be faster than your current system now for gaming. You can probably keep the ram and just do a board and cpu swap. Sell the vid card and buy a 7900gs or 1900gt as these are more cheaper than the pro but give you very similar results.

When I had 850xt and Pentium D @ 3.6ghz there was no game I couldn't play 1440x900. This resolution would be close to 1280x1024. No AA of course but it was fast enough on all my games except maybe FEAR online. Single player was doable. FEAR loves CPU power anyway.
 
I just upgraded the same machine you are (only I had a 6800GS, 6800 > X800 :p). I've been putting off the AGP upgrade for a while now, so this was the upgrade I've been avoiding where I finally swallow the cost of a new motherboard. Got an E6300 for free from work, and 2GB of DDxR2 at a discount, so I uppded to the system in my sig. I haven't had a chance to play with the 1950 yet. but so far ATI's drivers have been WAAAY better than they were in 2002.
 
Well if you're not going to upgrade for a year or more then an X1950 Pro AGP would be fine, bottlenecked by the CPU as compared even to a S939 @ 2.4 Ghz -- but in your situation it would be fine. It would definitely be far faster than any X850 series card except the X850XT PE but the X850PE would only be comparable at low resolutions (10*7-11*64) -- when bumped to anything above 1280x1024 the X1950 Pro would absolutely devistate it -- so in essence it would be perfect for you giving you SM3 and a good card for a 19" WS LCD you are looking to run, and it you could still throw that X1950 Pro card on a VIA VSTA LG755 with an E6600 a year later when you upgrade along with your current DDR memory and upgrade to a full PCIe only mobo and DDR2 memory when you're ready or stay with the AsRock VSTA mobo if it works for you.
 
thank you. in a year I will have more than enough money for an awesome directx 10 build. ( I will be graduating college then ) I am just looking for something to hold me over till then and then be able to use this system as a media center. I already have all the parts needed, (HDTV card, MCE 2005, ect)

any input on which card i should get from my original post?
 
actually, I just ran some numbers and if I part out my system plus a few other parts i have laying around I can go e6300, asus p5b, OCZ platinum 2gb, and an X1950XT for just $150... thanks guys!
 
I'd say upgrade the card...and overclock your 2.8 past 3.0....

a 2.8 should at least hit 3.2 at default voltage. you really should get 3.4ish...

a 3.4 socket 478 is still perfectly acceptable for gaming.

its cheaper to upgrade to pci express Heres how and why this is what i have found on newegg Pentium D 925 3.0ghz dualcore $127
ASUS 1950pro 256mb PCIE $179
ABIT IP-95 LGA 775 VIA P4M890 Micro ATX $59.99
add it all up and it comes to $366.98 395.98 w/ UPS overrnight thats 116.98 dollars more than the agp card !
and ive managed to sell some of my old stuff Cpu mobo vid card = 189 -395.98 =206 dollars
so in the end cost me 206 dollars pretty much the price of a pcie x1950pro PCIE card
and i got a new cpu and mobo and vid card with upgradabilty !!!

None of them. Like I said, they are overpriced. You can get an X1950XT for 214.
Those X1950pros from HIS you linked are a rip off. Why pay more for an inferior card ?
 
I went from a x800 gto2 16pipes to a x1950pro and honestly I don't see that much improvement - I can now play oblivion in hdr and force aa so that's nice, but really bloom wasn't that bad

At least I got a good deal on the x1950pro

you seem to think I have pci-express...if you look above i have AGP... an X1950XT wouldn't fit on my board.
