So, my girlfriend is looking for a Fathers Day gift, and is wondering what is the best VHS to DVD recorder available, for the cheapest price. Best bang for the buck. I have no idea, but I want to help her out with this. Now, she's not interested in transferring it to a PC and then recording it, she wants a stand-alone unit that can do it.

So far I've come up with these:

Panasonic DMR-EH75VS $349.30

JVC DR-MV7S $217.88

Panasonic DMR-ES45VS $127.95

Pioneer DVR-RT500 $179.99

LG LRY-517 $249.99

Sony RDR-VX530 $125.99

Any advice?

Hi Sniper

I got a Zenith ZRY-316 dvd/vrc recorder combo right around Christmas. The model's discontinued (that's what they said at Radio Shack where I bought it), but I got it for $180.

I'm truly tech-challenged, but the Zenith works like a dream recording from vhs to dvd, tv to vhs or dvd. Can use dvd-r, +r, rw discs. I will say it took me forever to get it hooked up correctly between the tv and digital cable box, but then again I'd only had a vcr which doesn't hook up the same way.

I read a few disappointing reviews about this particular model on Amazon, but so far I haven't had any of the problems they're talking about. Yes, it does take a few seconds for the zenith screen to come up and there is a small pause when starting a dvd or tape. But that doesn't bother me.

I found this link http://reviews.cnet.com/Zenith_ZRY_316_DVD_recorder_VCR_combo/4505-6463_7-31651355.html

and this which I'd never seen before - going to bookmark this one myself in case of a problem:
