VHD growing more than needed?

I got a VHD that holds an exchange and file server, win2k3, exchange 2k3, and runs Eset AV for exchange.

The VM is over 200 gigs and there is no reason for it to be over 130. It its taking up 228 gigs of disk space.

What is the best practice to shrink this guy? I got 40 gigs free on the array it is hosted on, I had to move 2 other servers off of the array as they where shutting down due to lack of disk space.
 
In the VM does the HDD have free space?
Run WinDirStat and see what is taking up unnesecary space.
Shrink the partition in windows disk mgt.
shrink the VHD
Convert VHD to fixed size.

You will get much better performance from fixed disk too.
 
Yeah there is space. I'll give this a whirl.
 
You might also check on your Exchange Log files, could be taking up a lot of space.
 
Not sure if you mean that the size within the VM is 230 GB or that you are consuming 230 GB whilst the VM reports the total disk size as far left.

Sounds like the former - in which case as Sc0tty alluded to "do you backup Exchange?" If you aren't you're never clearing down your transaction logs.

If it is the latter then you could be generating a snapshot file. Happened to me once even though I didn't ask for one, my VM grew to massive proportions until I merged it back in.

Yeah there was 2 files that needed to be merged.
