vga vs dvi LCD

Hey guys, I was just wondering if the equivalent of running a dvi LCD at non-recommended resolution yields image quality similar to a vga LCD running at recommended resolution. I am asking this because I have a choice to make between a 15' lcd vga 1024x768 or a 17' dvi 1280x1024. I'm going to be in college and will do some moderate gaming, and my modest computer probably wont be able to run any recent games in 1280x1024. my rig is in my sig.

DVI is an improvement over analog cable. You will get a pixel-perfect noise-free picture, but a nicely calibrated analog connection does not look bad at all.

On the other hand, running LCD in a non-native resolution will look absolutely dreadful. Also the 1280x1024 panel is 5:4 ratio. You will get a distorted picture running a 3:4-ratio format such as 1024 x 768 on a 5:4 panel.
