Let me first say that I did not know where to place this inquiry, and figured that the Displays forum would make sense since this pertains to a television cable.

I have a 42" HDTV, with only HDMI and component Y/Pb/Pr for connecting high definition devices.

I'd like to connect devices with VGA output to the TV, but I'd like to know if there are any VGA -> HDMI or VGA -> Y/Pb/Pr cables that can do this, or if some kind of converter box is needed. The reason I ask is because converter boxes tend to be expensive, and I'd much rather not go down that path if I don't have to.

Hopefully somebody here can answer my question, thank you for your time :).

Converting VGA to HDMI requires that you convert analog to digital, which cannot be accomplished with a cheap cable.

You must use a converter such as this one (if you're in the US and need 60Hz output) or this one (if you're not in the US and need 50Hz output). Those cost $120 and $130.

I briefly looked at component to HDMI converters but they cost twice as much.

I figured as much, going from an analog to digital signal. Ebay is riddled with vga to hdmi cables, was wondering if they worked. Guess not, good thing I checked. Thanks!
