I have a 21" Sony Trinitron CPD-G520. Could I use a vga to dvi cable to connect this type of monitor to one of the dvi ports on my vid card? If so, what type. I've read about the different dvi types and I'm still confused.

Why not just use a DVI to VGA adapter on your video card?

My current cable is pretty old and missing some screws, and if I can use a vga to dvi cable, i'd rather purchase one now rather than later. Also the dvi to vga adapter on my card seems to pull the dvi connector down due to weight.

Yes, that's the exact cable you need.

Btw FYI, that's a DVI-A to VGA cable. Only the analog pins are used and no digital-to-analog conversion takes place. And oftentimes a single cable is better than a cable+adapter since there is less resistance (and thus less graphic artifacts, usually)

Btw, have you tried both of the ports on your monitor yet? Just because that input is "DVI-A" it does not mean it is better than the VGA input. Personally i would experiment with both...

My monitor does not have a dvi port, it only has vga, that's why I'm looking for a cable that's vga to dvi, with vga end on crt monitor and dvi on video card.

You can't connect vga (analog) display to dvi (digital) vid card. Why not use the vga connection in your vid card (most have both connections)?

Actually, you can. you cant however use a dvi-d display with a vga card without a 200 dollar converter

My card has two dvi connections. I'm currently connecting my monitor through a vga cable and a vga adapter. The cable is pretty old and comes loose from time to time, and the weight of the adapter coupled with the weight of the end of the vga cable seems to pull the dvi connection on my video card down enough to give me cause for concern.

Crayon, I'm guessing the dvi-a cable would work for me then? Would there be any loss in quality?

DVI-I to VGA and DVI-A to VGA both work with an adaptor since they are both capable of carrying an analog signal.

Ahh, i see now. And the answer is still "yes", that's the exact cable you'll need.

DVI on a video card is "DVI-I" which contains both digital and seperate legacy pins for analog. This is the reason for those dvi-to-vga adapters ;). I believe you were confusing it with DVI-D, which is pure digital and no legacy pins for analog.

(edit: sorry, Sinister-Crayon had already explained all of this in his post above)
