Ok Guy's after reading the many many posts about this problematic cooler and after a frind destroyed his 9600 pro with one.

I want to push my 9600 pro further that my stock O/C (468 Core, 303 Ram) so i need a better cooler. Now i was thinking about a VGA silencer but NO waaaay am i taking the risk of tnstalling that thing. It seems that the idea is brilliant but the implmentation is very poor.

So what are my alternatives for a active 9600 cooling if possible with ram cooling aswell.

In a word Zalman hp 80
Did a lap dance added some ceramique and temps dropped from around 70c with stock cooling to around 47c with 22.5c room temp
under load.

Look, I installed the VGA Silencer without too many problems.

Here are the results of what I did:

I'm very happy with the results - excellent overclocking.

My 9800 Pro is running at 450 Mhz core - no artifacts at all !!

I think most people are crushing their GPUs by over tightening the screws on the retainer.

I had my doubts but the cooler rox - A+

Just ditch the doube-wide slot covers - it's ill fitting. Just use your video card's slot cover and remove the adjacent slot cover to let the hot air out.

guy guys, granted all recommendations above are good if not great, but have we forgotten how to be truly [H]ard?

go with a 1U cooler on that thing! =b sure it takes a tad bit of modding but the results are well worth the effort IMO ;)

Just so you know I went frm stock 500/345 oc on my 9600 Pro and isntalled a 1u rakcmount copper hsf + fan, and guess what i got? 500/345 :)

you need to VOLTMOD to take advantage of new cooling

LordBritish, what's wrong with the double-wide slot covers. I seemed to have no problems with mine on the Sapphire Radeon 9800Pro 256MB?

Also, can someone tell what's too tight on the retainer? My guess is make it snug but don't crank it down really, really tight.

jnex26, did your friend have the shim problem where the cooler didn't quite make contact with the GPU?

Looks like some good recommendations on alternative so far.:D

I didn't like the double-wide slot covers on the VGA Silencer because it did not fit my case too well. The hole where you screw it in place did not fit well and the outlets were jammed to one side. Furthermore, the exaust hole was not large enough.

My solution was to simply use the video card's stock slot/outlet cover and remove the adjacent slot cover. Good fit and larger exhaust hole.

You tighten the VGA Silencer retainer by alternately tightnening the screws - you don't screw one in all the way and then tighten the other all the way. You alternate as you tighten. Tighten the screws until the bendable metal strip touches the top of the black rubber washer - don't squash the rubber washers until they bulge out and look like pancakes !!!!!

Yeah I ordered one.. the thing is a beast.. just like the giant 2 i had.. if nothing is good on that thing.. the dual heatpipes will own at cooling the card down.. the only gripe is the little 40 mm sink on top coz it will be noisy as hell.. but not if i keep the damn thing turned off so all is good.. my giant 3 arrives in about 2 weeks all the way from USA.. cant wait!

:) Thanks LordBritish, that clears things up a bit. Looks like I didn't overtighten the first time, used the grounding strip as well. Very possible that first video card was DOA anyway.

I may not use that double slot thing this time around. I didn't notice the exhaust hole. With the exhaust not being flush with the slots to begin with, I think the slot holes for exhaust need to be bigger anyway. Is there anything I can do about the space between exhaust and slots to close this gap with something?
