VGA extension cable not good enough

I wasn't sure where to post this, but this seems to be the most relevant place.

I have a really old Belkin VGA extension cable that I'm using right now. It works absolutely perfect at 1024x768. When I run it at 1280x1024 (my LCDs native resolution), however, it produces a little blur. Also, for some reason, there's a red bar on the right hand side that throws off the auto-adjust feature.

So, my question to you guys is this. Should I just get a newer VGA extension cable, or should I just buy a longer VGA cable? Is there a disadvantage to either way, and which would be cheaper?

If memory serves me right, the longer the VGA cable the more the picture degrades. How old is the cable you are using now? If it is ancient I would suggest picking up a new cable.
