Hey guys.
I just finished my W/C project, and now I'm looking to get SOME sort of Fan controller/display in my case. The Matrix Orbital displays I really like. I'm just up in the air between buying the VFD, or the PLED version. I thought that perhaps y'all could shed some light on this, and help educate this professed n00b.

Also, if you know of some other well made displays/controllers, do share them. I'd love to keep my options open.

my friend has a blue matrix orbital with the blue filter thing and let me tell you it isnt blue ;) it really pissed him off when he plugged it in and it was teal not blue
 
I just ordered a VL systems LIS POP VFD (red) for $54.99! they are all on sale at xoxide. Very good price on those. The only con is the serial interface, but oh well. I guess the VFD's do use a colored screen to change the color to red/green/blue.. Oh well. I guess the PLED might be better if you don't like that. But the price is sure right on these. :)

Are you looking for a general technology comparison?

VFDs certainly have a fuzzier, more "nixie tube" appearance while in operation. VFDs have quick response rates compared to LCDs, but they have a few drawbacks. They are not very shock-resistant, and color selection is limited. Nonetheless, I think that they have character in ways that LCDs and OLEDs/PLEDs don't have.

PLEDs more closely resemble backlit LCDs, because of the sharp and well-defined pixel areas, except that they are brighter and sharper than any LCD could be. They have very fast pixel response rates as well. I like to think of them as LCDs with all of the advantages and none of the drawbacks.
 
Though i do not posess any P/OLED displays, i must note that VFD's have a little more modding options;
- change colors using filters
- stealthing, behind tinted plexi / foil it can be invisible until turned on, very cool :cool:
