i got a vfd made by Epson but i cant figure out how to wire it ( i dont care whether its serial or parrallel) it has 2 chips on the back. the larger one reads:
EPSONJapan
SED2800Fva
F02120157

abd the smaller one reads:
H8/3644
2L2
64F3644H
Japan

its a 2x20 VFD terminated with what looks like a Cat cable end (8 wires)

any idea how to set this up? any articals i can read?

You sure about that first chip?

Epson does make the SED series of LCD controller ASICs, but they don't seem to have any information on an SED2800.

This is the chip you want to find info on. The other IC is probably display RAM or ROM.

yeah thats what it reads, i cant find any datasheets for it

I would suggest contacting Epson directly on this. They don't seem to display any publicly available information on this ASIC. Still, if you find out that it's equivalent to another more popular chip like the Motorolla HD44780 (ideally), then you might be able to find a solution. Otherwise I think you're SOL.

you may beed to break out with some moneys and get yourself a real PC VFD, like Matrix Orbital.
