Very odd touchpad issue

I ordered a refurbished Gateway for a friend from TigerDirect. It showed up, and everything is nice and it looks perfect, except there's this weird issue with the touchpad. It only recognizes your finger on half of the pad (the right half). If you slide your finger from right to left, it just quits recognizing any input once you get halfway across the pad and the mouse just sits motionless on the screen.

I tried reinstalling the current touchpad drivers (it's ALPS or something of that sort. I'm just running on memory since I'm not near the computer at the moment). That didn't work. I tried installing a different driver, nothing.

If anyone has a clue, I'd love to hear.
