I've just bought brand new SP94 and 80mm tornado (AS5), installed it and for some reason, instead of going down, temps went up! (39c-40c instead of around 32c - I had zalman 7000 before). I've taken it out, reapply AS5 (very very thin layer), mounted it again and still no change... I have an Antec case with 5 fans - two blowing at front, one blowing at the door and two sucking in the back. Temps were taken using MBM5
any idea?

How much cfm does that 80mm fan give out? You might need a 92mm Tornado. You should have stayed with the Zalman, a very quiet and effective cooler.

Get a 92mm fan, then check the temps again. That 80mm is whats keeping those temps up.

Also, which way did you position the heatpipes with respect to your case/motherboard. That makes a big difference too.

funny thing is...
i have a sp-94 and a 92mm tornado. and only get about 37C @ idle (at 3.19ghz) i think i might of applied mine wrong also, but abit mobos display higher temps than the actual. so im not sure.

helping him would help me also ;x

no offence, but that's a bunch of crap. the 80mm Tornado is a very (very!) strong fan and there's no way that's the reason for the temps i was reporting. It may surprise you, but without a duck, 80mm achived better results than the 92 tornados, because the dead zone was smaller.

right now the heat pipes are directed towards the back of the case

abit report high temps, that's true, but that doesn't explain the temps going up after switching from weaker HSF and generic paste to top-of-the-line air cooling

True.

Are you absolutly sure that you installed the heatsink properly? I know high temps sometimes indicate that there isnt enough pressure from the heatsink onto the processor, and/or the heatsink not making good contact with the processor core. Have you checked the markings left by the thermal paste on your heatsink when you pull it off? Not to dis thermalright, but your heatsink may need some lapping to make it smooth. Also dont be afraid to tighten that sucker down a little more if you are still getting some high temps.

Keep in mind that AS5 needs time to settle and "break in". Your temps will probably go down after a week or so. Keep track and if they dont go down in a week or so, switch out for the Zalman and let us know how the temps are.

bullshit. My sp-94 is just as quiet as the zalman and much more effective. Look at my sig.

To the thread starter, you do know that you are suposed to keep tightening the screws until they lock, right? You cant overtighten them so turn them until they hard lock for the perfect amount if pressure.

yeah i gotta agree, even with my 92MM TORNADO my temps are pretty high. i could of sworn i would of gotten around 32C.. im only gettin about 37C@ idle
btw im using artic ceramique.

but ill try tighting the screws more.. if anything helps ill try it

i tightened the screws as much as i could...until they wouldnt even turn anymore and it started warping the screws. i didnt hear any pop ...or lock. so i dunno. temps didnt change at all

There is no bullshit here. The Thermalright is a great heatsink but with a high cfm fan. Check out the ranking. SP-94 beats the Zalman by a little but not without the noise.

A couple of things. First, I may have overlooked it in that chart, but nowhere did I see the sp-94 listed. The sp-94 is very different than the slk-900. Also, I have trouble believing a review that lists the zalman as putting out 41db...THAT IS AS LOUD AS MY OLD SMARTFAN TWO HAIRDRYER AT FULL SPEED AND ONLY A FEW DB LESS THAN A TORNADO:rolleyes: (whenever I remember that fan I have to shout, sorry). That, my friends, is bullshit.

i dont think that article is 100% accurate

they may have tested the dBa levels in a loud environment

im pretty sure that there are no fans that are 60+ dBa that ppl can tolerate

and the Zalman is rated(i know its not necesarily true but its still close) at 25 dBa not 40 or whatever the article had it as

sorry to break up the discussion...but i dont really care which is better...

... me and kikkler still have a problem. :(

Try flipping the fan over and have it blow in the other direction sometimes this helps.

WE all know the SP-94 is a great hs, with a tornado. The Zalman comes close with very little noise. That's all I'm saying. The Zalamn is way cheaper and performs very well. The OP is having better performance with the Zlaman verses the Thermalright.
