Very Confused by SATA

I just purchased an ASUS P4S800d-e deluxe mobo with onboard sata. I also just bought a wd raptor for the sata. I am at a loss on how to install windows on the drive. The Mobo has the sis 655tx chipset with 964 southbridge which supposedly has native sata. do i have to install sata drivers before i install windows or what? and if so, which drivers do i install for an sis based board? the regular ide drivers? thanks for any assistance.
 
You should have a driver disk for the Sata controller that came with your motherboard.

When you boot from your windows install CD, you should see an option that says Hit F6 to install 3rd party raid/scsi drivers.

Well do so, it'll prompt you for the disk when it starts copying files, and you'll be able to select the drive when it asks you where you wish to install windows to.

Inexplicably that driver floppy is NOT included and to add to your frustration it is not possible to make a driver floppy off the CD in anything other than windows so you've got to find a computer working with windows on it and use the make disk utility to make the SiS 180 driver and then hit f6 on Win install and use the disk when specified twice first to install the 964 SATA controller and then the 180 controller (if you're using SATA 3 & 4).

Stupid and annoying but not an isolated incident unfortunately.
 
there are two controllers and raid arrays to select. the 964 sata ports are which you are going to want to use first, not the 105. after connnecting to these proper ports. select the proper sata device as the primary, select boot order, use driver provided by floppy if necessary e.g. as if you are installing a raid ready with an ich5r.

when installing windows for the first time, if ide device are present with the sata with partitions. then windows will assign the drive order as ide0m c:, ide1s, d:, etc. what you need to do is create a partition on the sata drive and then reboot. after the reboot the sata will be assigned c:, ide0m d:, ide1s e:, etc.

I'm having a similar problem. Everything recognizes my seagate 160gb SATA. except when i try to install windows xp. I have a gigabyte 7n400 pro. it gives me the option to press f4 to enter RAID utilitywhich gives me the options to create raid set, low level format etc.. what can i try ?

To install windows in the RAID array you need to boot from your windows CD, and during the first screen that pops up it gives you two options at the bottom .

Pressing F6 allows you to specifiy 3rd party drivers for installation. YOU NEED to do this or else windows won't have the drivers to recognise your RAID controller and array. (You also need to have the driver disc)

Pressing F2 will start the automatic recovery procedure.

The SiS 655tx chipset on this mobo came out the same if not better then the Intel in a review done by [H] a little while ago. Which was one of the reasons I also got this board (which is fantastic) not to mention its like 70 bucks less.
 
i've got it to say insert disk in drive a: and have downloaded the si3112 RAID driver on another computer, but am lost on how to make the floppy.
 
when i try to use the floppy disk it says the file si3112r.sys cannot be found. I made the floppy on a machine w/win95. do you think this could have effected it.

yeah screw intels chipset stability and native sata, lets go with sis which has consistantly been dogshit when compared to even via chipsets.

actually my ass is pretty hairy. That usually happens after puberty. in about 5 years you might know. As for Sis, they have always been shit.
 
Sis used to be shit when they made low end cheap ass shitsets on asslike Pcchips boards. They rebounded when they began making p4 chipsets, and now their flagship 655tx chipset beats intel fair and square. get your ass off the toilet and look up some info before you comment on stuff you have no clue about. :rolleyes:
