Very bad temps from me?

Well I have a 2.8C cooled by a CNPS7000 AlCu. The temps seem to be a bit sketchy. Idle, I get around 45 degrees on my CPU. Yes it is high. I let my computer run for a couple hours with nothing except MBM5 running. I come back to 57 degrees. A jump of 12 degrees, both while idle. What could be causing the spikes?

Reseating the heatsink is my best option right?
 
my p4 3.0c with thermalright copper 900sk heatsink with Abit ic7 mobo idles at 44, after farcry it goes to 57. after WoW it will go to 52. After CS it will stay at 44. After RoN it goes to 57. Hardly ever see it at or past 60.

Weird the way your's jumps that high just idling. I'd reseat the heatsink, clean off the current grease, apply new (maybe more).
 
at the very least check contact with the core. reseat the heatsink, follow the directions for the thermal paste (you are using real thermal paste, right?)
 
I think I probably did do a shitty job of applying the AS5. I will reapply and reseat and report back. Are there any recommended methods?

By the way, when my temps shoot up to around 55, the computer feels so sluggish. It like lags when I try to navigate though folders and such. Is this normal also?
 
What are your ambient temps, cause if your room is somewhat hot that might explain the high temps.
 
recommended method is basically put a dab in the center of the heatspreader, then twist the heatsink a little while putting it on. at least that's what arctic silver says on their site, and i'm inclined to believe them.

the sluggishness can probably be attributed to the p4 clock throttling that is implemented to keep the chip from overheating. i think that kicks in at around that temp (especially if your motherboard is reading low)

do you have any fan management software installed or fan speed stuff turned on in bios?
 
Ok...When first turnin gon the system, I get 29 for system and 45 for CPU...Does that tell you guys anything?...Over here in Mass it isn't too hot, usually around 70 or 80...No A/C in my room though...

One quick thought, I keep reading that IC7 read high...Sorry I didn't tell you my mobo was an IC7...Can anyone explain this to me? Is it only for system or is it for CPU also?
 
do you have a lot of spyware?

maybe its popping up every once in awhile and choking your CPU to get those spikes


a little farfetched but people really like spyware and stuff these days

No no no.. :p that's what "people" recommend ;)

For AS5, what you want to do is put a little bit (tiny drop even) of the paste on the core and spread it FLAT all over it. It should be like a thin thin layer of AS5 all spread over the core evenly. The paste will heat up and cool down every time you turn on/off your computer (which you should do at least a couple of times within the first week of applying) to let the matrix expand and whatnot into the best contact between the HS and your processor. Remember, for AS5, more isn't better.. thin, FLAT layer. :) good luck!
 
oh yeah that's the ceramique instructions i'm thinking of:eek: silly me.

spyware could contribute, but it shouldn't cause that drastic of a change. are you sure that no one installed folding on your computer while you weren't looking? the google toolbar comes with it, so that might be it.

also, are you using the zalman fanmate? it hurts performance, but lowers noise. tradeoffs. you pick. but try taking it off if you have it on.
 
No I don't think there is spyware...No internet access on it yet...It was a recent format...All I put on it so far were drivers, Nero, and MBM5...

As for the fanmate, yes I am using it but it is cranked way up to the max...Should I just get rid of it?

Its not only the CPU that spikes up I noticed...The system temp spiked up to 37 from 29...Not much of a spike like the CPU though...


Is it my IC7 reading it all messed up?
 
it could just be reading wrong... does the case feel any hotter when the temps go up?

and more importantly, is it still stable? cause if it is you shouldn't worry about it. even if it is actually getting hotter, it is still well within the maximum temp for a p4, even if the motherboard is reading accurately (and it is probably a few C high).
 
ic7's read temps about 10c higher than other mobo's if I'm not mistaken.

Not too sure about it being s table or not...It sure feels a bit laggy though when the temps kick up into the high temps...

As for the applying, I put a dab in the middle and just let the heatsink's pressure spread the compound...Should I reapply by spreading all of it instead of the dab method?
 
My IC7/2.8c gets about the same temps as you are getting, but I'm using the stock heatsink and fan. I'm switching to watercooling soon though...

Your idle temps are around 45 for CPU and 30 for system?

Do your temps spike like mine?

i'm suprised noone asked this yet....
how many case fans do you have?

i'm in CT(near the coast so its usually 10*F cooler), its pretty hot for me. I usually run a 233 FSB so my ram runs at 466mhz on my 2.4 which puts me just over 2.7. when i shut my case fans off for silent running, like when watching a movie real late, or if i leave it on when i sleep idle goes up to 45 CPU, wouldn't want to try loading it.

pretty much w/ case fans at 12V it stays in the high 20's C, and at 7V it stays in the high 30's C. no caase fans mid/high 40's C. i believe those are all normal/reasonable temps.

edit: my temps don't spike unless there is a load. run task manager(i assume u'r running XP?), have the update speed slow and keep an eye on it, it shouldn't really change much even while surfing the web.
 
MY case fans are two of these for intake and one of this for exhaust...

I will run the task manager, and see what is up...I don't think tehre will be anything...It is a brand new install of XP with only MBM5 and Nero installed...

The wiring is a bit messy but I don't think that would effect my CPU temps...
 
p4's basically make up the temp they report. dont worry about it as long as its stable and quiet
