Is it possible to buy a version that doesn't require you to activate it? Similar to the hacked version of XP one could find a year or so ago. I am not asking about a hacked version though, I want a legal version, just one that I don't have to activate :D

The only version of XP that does not have activation is the Corporate. You would need to buy a minimum of 5 licenses in order to qualify for a corporate license.

This does not mean you need to buy 5 XP licenses, you could buy any combonation of OS or Applications to reach the minimum. (e.g. 3 XP Pro and 2 Office 2003 licenses.)

Don't the OEM versions that people like Dell ship not require activation? I don't remember having to activate the copy I installed on some guys laptop yesterday...

1. He asked for a legal version of XP he can buy that does not require activation.

2. Unless that Dell CD came with that guy's laptop, you commited piracy which is against forum rules.

easy slick, there was no piracy going on there.

to above post: yes OEM still requires activaiton. not sure why you didn't have to activate that one, maybe you didn't leave it sit long enough. what version of windows is it?

to original post: i think the only one is the coperate, as said above.

If the OEM copy is bios locked, there won't be activation, unless the bios lock breaks.

Yup you can guy a dell pc and not have to activate and reload windows as many times as you want with thier CD. Don't know about other OEMs but I know that's the case with dell for a fact.

YE_S !!! I AM AN EIVBLI PIRAT !!! I WILL BURN IN HELLL AND BE BANED AND SODOMISD BY HORDS OF RABID HAMSTER-MONKEY NEINJAS!!@!

You know what they say about what happens when you make assumptions? It makes an ass out of you and I leave early for lunch. I was just tossing in a data point that was somewhat related to the topic at hand. Yes, it's a bios-locked CD, so the only machines the CD will install on are the machines that are supposed to have a licence in the first place.

While not entirely reasonable for an individual to purchase an OEM licence, your original statement that "The only version of XP that does not have activation is the Corporate" is incorrect, as other versions that do not require activation exist.

Now, what I really wonder is why the original poster is concerned about not activivating... If you think you're going to wipe your HDD repeatedly, you can wait up to 30 days to activate. If it's something else, like a philosophical disagreement with activation, don't get XP. If you object to what MSFT did to XP, don't buy the product; it's the only way that the message is going to get across to them.

...or you could just get 2000 instead.

the difference between dell cd's and the standard OEM disc is that the motherboards are bios lock so they will only install the dell disc.. thats why you can use a compaq disk on a dell or the opposite way. Also Dell disks/others/ arent standard OEM disks they are actually RECOVERY disks.

The poster wanted to buy Windows XP software without activation, hence there is only one that can be bought and installed on multiple machines without activation and without committing piracy so long as the purchaser buys enough licenses to cover the number of machines he/she wishes to install it on.

Dell OEM software is tied via license to the Dell computer you bought it with and in XP OEM software can be Pre-Activated at the factory, so your statement is incorrect.

Use 2000.

This exact reason why I don't use XP. I just went through to muchb activation hassle, on top of that XP pisses me off.

Why is it that IT HAS to install MSN Crapsanger and Windows Weak Movie Monkey, and Windows Mediocre Player and other crap I don't want to see on my Programs list nor am I wanting to Tweak my system to get rid of those shity programs when I install my OS.

5 licenses does not qualitfy you for Corporate license. It only qualifies you to participate in the minimum level of the Open license program. You will receive conventional retail badged products, all requiring activation. To qualify for corporate non-activated versions, you need to purchase a minimum of 250 seats.

Without talking to anyone and just surfing the MS site, it looks like 5 licenses are the minimum to get a Volume License Porduct Key, which is what Corp Edition is.

I would suggest reading more about Open License Value and Open License Business I have several clients on these *and* using corporate media that *does not* require activation.

No thier just standard ole XP disks they just don't require activation if you install off of them.

If I create a ghost image with windows XP activated do that mean windows XP is activated next time I load it?

As long as you are placing the ghosted image back on to the original hardware, otherwise if you try to ghost an image to other systems, it will detect a hardware change and prompt for activation again.

Not trying to start any arguments, but what your "suggesting" probably borders on breaking forum rules.

That's interesting because our district license with MS just states that they will annually take a toll of the machines running XP and will apply a fee based on that. And we have a Corporate License.

Your actually wrong, The only differance between Corp and Pro is the actual CD Key, The software itself is identicle, so if you were to download an the corp version when you put in the Pro key it will ask you for activation. The secret lies within the CD Key, not the version of software.

Nope, that is wrong too.
Corp Key only works with Corp dist. CD.
I tried to use a corp key on a retail XP Pro and it wouldn't work, I had to use the Corp CD and Corp Key to install.

There are a few files added to corp to get around the activation, that's the only difference.
