I finally got dsl from verizon. I got the Westell model 6100 (DSL2 + Router) modem. I was wondering, since this dsl modem is also a router, it contains i believe a hardware firewall, etc , would the settings of the dsl modem router have conflict if i were to connect it to another router that supports wireless? Also, would it make a difference in speed if i get a better dsl modem?

If you already have a router..and you wish to add wireless....you want to add an access point, not another wireless router. Many wireless routers can be sort of reconfigured to be used as an access point. Or you can flip the Westell to pure bridged mode..using it just as a modem, and use your own router for the PPPoE, NAT, and wireless.
