Verifying if ECC is working

Hello everyone,

I just purchased 2x4GB ECC DDR3 modules for a home server.

I am wondering how I can tell if ECC is working or not. I ask because the system I am using is an AM3 platform. All AM3/AM3+ CPUs support ECC. However, there is some conflict on on whether or not all AM3 motherboard support ECC. I am familiar with Memtest but some users have reported that memtest does not show ECC as working even when they are running a system that 100% supports ECC.

I am thinking that if the system boots and functions, it means the ECC is working yes? Or is it possible for the system to boot and work with ECC ram but with the ECC disabled?

This is important for me because I plan on running either Ubuntu + ZFS or FreeNas (depending on what performs better). I will NOT run ZFS unless I know for sure that the ECC is functioning.

I do plan on moving to a intel server platform later but I cannot afford it now. The RAM was free ($17 and paid for with Amazon points) so I bought it anyways. I wont take a loss if the ram cannot be used right now.

Thank you

edit: I just noticed the Memory sub forum, I hope this subforum is acceptable.

You might be able top check with Sisoft Sandra.

Also check and make sure ECC is turned on in the BIOS.

Pour water on the ram and see if it corrects the errors. :D

I think Memtest86 will tell you if it sees ECC.
That's the best way I can think of.
