Verify DMI Data Pool problem, no os installed

I have a fresh WD IDE ATA 100, 160GB hard-drive with nothing, no os on it. When my friend and I put it into my machine all we got to Verify DMI Data Pool and then it just lingered there. We tried it on his motherboard an MSI Neo4 Platinum, mine was a MSI Neo4 Vanilla and we still got the same result.

My sisters harddrive that came with her emachine got to a black screen that listed a bunch of options, like start from safe mode, start normally because it detected drastic hardware. That was as far as I got before she decided to take it back. I also tried resetting cmos, no effect on the problem. Now the chances this is a hard drive problem are pretty high right? All the connections are on fine too. Thanks

This issue can be caused by any of the following:

1. Corrupt boot files on the computer.
2. Settings for hard disk drive are not correct.
3. Floppy diskette or CD in computer causing issue.
4. Boot devices not set properly.
5. BIOS corrupt or misc. setting not set properly.
6. Connections loose or disconnected.
7. Bad Hard disk drive or other bad hardware.

Its the master, I searched and saw plenty of answers but most of them didn't work for me and some didn't apply.

99% of the time I've seen that problem, it's hard drive related. Reset the CMOS, reboot then go back into the BIOS and enable the "Reset configuration data" setting, and make sure all hard drive settings are to "Auto", save, and reboot.

If it still fails to go past that, likely a bad HD.

For some bizarre reason, both of my nForce2 based systems default to CHS access mode in the BIOS for the IDE setup. After enabling LBA, the drive works normally. You have this option o nthe Standard CMOS features page in the BIOS. Try that in addition to everything else that's been outlined by others, then run manufacturer diagnostics. Try a different drive in your rig, and RMA the drive if applicable.

Well an update, tried my friends hd and it worked fine, and when my friend tried my hd as slave and it works. By itself it gives you the dmi error. Is this a symptom of an latent ESD error?
