Vendor's Restore Disk Only Sets up Half of Raid Array

I had a failure of my Falcon Northwest system. I bought two new 500GB drives and set them up with RAID Striping, as the first two drives were set up. The system used to have two 250GB drives.

When I ran the system restore, it only allocated 500GB of the array. Is it possible the restore disk was "hard coded" to only do 500GB, not the 1000GB that it should be? Windows "sees" a 1000GB array, but has 500GB of unpartitioned space still.

Restore disk is going to create the same sized array as your original configuration; don't expect it to fill your new setup.

So, I should use a commerical application to expand the partition to fill the remaining space? Is this safe/reliable in a RAID 0 environment?

Would you advise another course of action?

Perhaps there's a way to ask the restore disk to recognize the new size -- it's the same disk configuration, just different sized drives.

Is this a software RAID, or hardware based?

It's onboard the Mobo -- NVIDIA's RAID controller. I think I'm just going to give Partition Magic a whirl and see if it's successful. There's no data on the PC now, aside from the O/S after the restore disk.

If that fails, I'll go get a new commerical copy of Windows and install that.

A software based program like PM will not be able to change the size of the array

I'm not sure why it'd be changing the size of the array, unless I'm confused. The *array* is 951GB. Windows is partitioned to use about 460GB. Windows detects the ARRAY at the full 951GB (or whatever it is), and just reports that some of it is unpartitioned -- due to the recovery disk expecting a much smaller array.

I'd simply take all of the unpartitioned space and, instead of making it D:, I'd just make it part of C:. Am I completely off the wall here, or did I just not explain myself well enough the first time?

Partition Magic is only $69 to download, unless there's a better option.

Ah. So it being a RAID array is irrelevent, you're just talking about resizing a partition. PM should work just fine

I tried gPartEd, and it saw the volumes (correctly) as two physical disks, ignoring the array, and would NOT let me "grow" the partition to the size I wanted.

If this is the case with PM as well, I'd rather not burn the $69 on it to find out. Anyone know?

EDIT: changed a place I said "array," but meant "partition" .. sorry!

gPartEd did not accommodate this change, as far as I could tell, but Partition Magic did. Worth the $70, in my opinion.

Thanks for the advice!
