I am looking at buying a Velocity Micro computer so I read the [H] Consumer reveiw of the Velocity Micro Gamers' Edge PCX. It's not the one I'm interested in but I figured it would be a good idea to read about something from VM.
Anyway, there was a part in there about the PSU being loud.
I copy & pasted it:
Our only complaint is that this system is a bit louder than wed like it to be. We put our finger on all the case fans and determined that the culprit is the Velocity Micro branded power supply, which has two 80mm fans and is quite loud.
But its not as loud as the Tornado fans on the Vigor Gaming PC we recently tested.
The noisy PSU is confusing to us: Since the system uses an Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro to cool the CPU (one of the most quiet CPU coolers available), and the chassis fans are relatively quiet, it would seem like an effort had been made to keep this systems noise profile small (this is an assumption, obviously). Why throw the work away by adding a noisy power supply? Perhaps were wrong about this, but several people in the office remarked on how noisy the system was during testing. Its not irritating or deafening, but certainly noisy enough for it to be noticed. Against an ambient sound level of 39dB, this system hit 55dB while it was on. We didn't see an appreciable difference on load. While this system is far from some of the jet engines we've had in the offices, it's still very much on the upper end of our noisier systems.
So if I wanted to buy a Velocity Micro Vector GX Holiday Edition, should I get the Antec PSU instead of the VM PSU? I might not get the Vector GX Holiday Edition, but I am planning on buying a PC from VM and I want to know if I should opt from something other then the VM PSU.
