Vega Rumors

It seems to me it was thermal throttling by dropping voltage but still keeping frequency the same?

Yea a bit confuse how the frequency stay more or less the same especially when it seems to be a thermal issue.
 
I think what we should be looking at is if it delivers price: performance compared to it's competition and delivers at least 1080 levels for <$549 or 1080ti levels < $700.
Sure, but let's be fair, AMD knowing all that will price it between 1070 and 1080 if they really have to.

So they will be able to claim that they have the better price perf but given the power consumption differential... it won't take too long for that advantage to disappear.

Historically AMD prices it $50-100 too much, so that's what I expect.
 
So yeah. I've personally concluded that vega sucks. Don't see how the gaming card can be much of an improvement. GTX 1070 that uses twice the power and is over a year late. Have to be super cheap for me to ever consider for a machine.

Bad deal all around, that's not going to move the industry forward very quick, AMD. Wish you'd corner Nvidia for once.

I don't know. They were firing up a mining benchmark when that happened having just wrapped up the gaming benchmarks, so I'm fairly certain there was more at play than the card, drivers, or OC. I just felt the timing of when it happened extremely funny. It was adding insult to injury.
 
As to mining 44MH/s is nothing to sneeze at. RX cards score in the low 20s. My Fury X card handles nearly 30.
 
well better results than the other guy, but yeah, not good for sustained mining or lots of miners lol.

Eth mining is still at 30 where did the 44 figure come from, missed some parts.

You'd currently be making about $5-$8 per 24 hour period with a single card in a generic (one click setup) mining pool like nice hash at that hash rate-- more if you specialize.

No I currently have two fury X card mining in my main PC. I bought the PC and the cards for gaming and my primary use is gaming. In the last week, for the first time, I joined the mining movement with nicehash and made, at most, 10.50 in just one day. :eek:

I use the two Fury X cards - I dropped their TDP by 20% which doesn't affect hash rate, or maybe affects it by a percent or two. I pay about $60-70 cents a day for each card I figure. So in one day I paid back both cards electricity for the week.

If I was only gaming on them as I've only done for the last six months + (too bad I didn't invest the time to look into mining sooner) --- as I've said a bunch of times in the last two pages --- the primary purpose (only purpose) of these particular desktop cards was to game -- power consumption in that scenario is too minimimal a stat to matter. This Vega idles as 14-16 watts according to the review we just watched. Gaming between 250-300 watts. (3 cents an hour if at full TDP)

if you are mining with a house full of them, or if you are talking mobile version of said card - yes of course it matters. For the average joe american buying these particular cards -- it just doesn't amount to a hill of beans one way or the other as to power draw.

The particular stat that would keep me from mining on this card isn't 300 watt power draw -- it's price of purchase!

Different folks for different folks, a 1k card that hashes at 30mhs on eth takes 1-1.5 years to pay off

yup. this frontier edition should have hashed @ 50 minimum IMHO.
They said it did 44MH/s for Eth
My stock firmwware Fury X do 29MH/s

So It's about 50% faster than the single Fury X for that function.

That's with no BIOS/firmware optimizations for such on Vega, or potential further driver optimizations yet. 50 isn't too far outside the realm of possibility.

What other single card can match that? (1080TI does 35 on DaggerHashimoto)

(we all understand this isn't a mining card - because of the barrier to entry price - but it is a strong initial performance in this realm).

did they show which mining software, cause later on they showed 30, I missed the 44 one.
 
tiled bin rasterizer not working for AMD by default, code needed.....
So what is your thought? It has to be programmed for by developer or still something AMD can put into drivers? Sounds like a big item for increasing performance.
 
Was hoping 60MH/s out of these. Even at 45-50MH/s.. I would have bought a couple to mine with, had they also been good at gaming so they'll actually sell okay later on. 5-6 months there's gonna be oodles of second hand RX5xx cards, won't be able to give them away.

A high end gaming card though? Those sell okay, or better than the cheap charlie ones, at any rate.
 
looks like dagger hashimoto is eth on nicehash, don't know if independent miners can use that algo. never liked nicehash because of the long ass dag file load up times.

At this point it looks like it has to be programmed for, primitive shaders. I don't think it will improve performance that much. This is why Scott was saying he thinks it won't improve performance much on witcher 3, newer games maybe, but why bother with it when its only like 1% of the over all market? (Vega only)

It's not good for mining though, at least not yet. Maybe once claymore/eth miner dev optimizes. Drivers mature a bit. Who knows.

But from what we've seen.. you could run 3x 470 right now, use about the same amount of power, and have twice the hashrate.

Maybe AMD should just leave off the video ports and sell them as cheap a possible to miners. I can see why AMD/Nvidia would do that so that they don't crash the gaming market cards later. Anyways I am not sure Vega will even be a viable product for AMD. Nothing about Vega 11 either, I wonder if Vega 11 is suffering even a worse fate than Vega 10?
